Hong Kong - 12 May
We arrived in Hong Kong and made our way down to the harbour. We stayed on Kowloon island and looking out onto the harbour we could see HK island. The Sea edge is built up with many towering business buildings with lots of brand names shining out at us on the tops of the buildings. Boats were ferrying people back and forth from one island to the other and there were tourists and chinese people strolling across the harbour.
Unfortunately, the weather was very smoggy while we were there so the visibilty of the buildings was not that great, but we returned to the harbour in the evening to watch the 'symphony of lights' show, where all the buildings shone bright neon coloured lights and lazer beams to the sound of music!! It was prety impressive!
Kowloon island, where we stayed, was built up with neon lighting, busy streets, people rushing, and lots of shops and restaurants. Looking up, the buildings are really tall and from the outside the shops look really small. We stayed in a hostel that was on top of some shops, it was strange because it didn't look like the buildings have much in them but going up them, there are winding with long corridors and lots of rooms! The chnese like to cram everything in that they can!
I think HK is a rich mans country, there are many expensive restaurants, we saw so many Lamborginis and other expensive cars (as Lee reassured me) If you had a bit of money, HK is the place to spend it!
We went up Victoria peak, a hill top viewing podium that looks out over the city. To get to the peak, we took the steepest tram known to man, we were vertually horizontal! At the top of the peak is a shopping centre, restaurants and the viewing point. Again, the smog was really thick and we couldn't see a lot of the city but the tram alone was worth going up for!
We also visited the 'Ocean Park'....let's just say this was HK's take on 'Paultons Park'!!! :s Not really worth the money but we did see some pandas which were in full view, happily muching away on bamboo! They were so cute!
On the second night in HK, we met up with Lee's friend Marc and his friend Andy. We went for some dinner and had a look around the markets. The following day we went to a place called Stanley, on HK island. There was a beach and a market there. Lee and Marc swam out to a podium in the sea and both collapsed when they reached it.....they told us they were 'smiimmig against the tide'!! :P In the evening we found a good old Irish bar to watch Chelsea V Portsmouth, so the boys were happy, and Lee had his first Magners of the trip...only costing 9 pound for two bottles!!!
We also took a trip on the ferry around the harbour, and the day we did this the weather was much clearer so we could see a lot more of the buildings and skyscrappers. We also visited the space museum!
