We went for breakfast as soon as it was ready this morning, we wanted to get there before the big group of people got up and stole all the baked beans! Afterwards we went back to our room to pack our bags, it was time to check out of Bounty and go to the last island on our list, South Sea. But it doesn't end there, we are going back to the mainland afterwards and down south to Beqa Lagoon to dive with Bull Sharks! Can't wait for that!
But for now we are still indulging in the slow Fijian pace of life. We paid our bar bill which came to $175! (that's Fijian dollars, so it only came to £65). Not bad considering the amount of alcohol we drank the other night.
We went and watched the turtles one last time before our transfer boat came to collect us. We finally got to see them being fed and were surprised they were given fish! We thought they only ate sea weed and other vegetation. Oh well, I guess Chris will think twice when poking his little finger at them. Despite the fact they might want to try human flesh we both gave them a little stroke on the head while the staff weren't looking. Then we watched the staff pick one up and use a brush with thick bristles to scrub the turtles shell. He did it quite violently but he assured us the turtles didn't feel anything. He said he was scrubbing any attached parasites and algae away. They may not feel the scrubbing but I'm pretty sure they'll have a head ache after being shook so hard lol
The transfer boat came at 11:30am and took us over to South Sea Island. We were pleased as we got closer, it looked really nice from the Flyer! Then we got worried as we watched loads of children and parents come over from the island. We were worried that it would be a family resort with kids running around and sleeping in the large dorm room! There goes our little paradise we thought. Thankfully later we were told they were all day trippers! We could handle that. In fact the island was so quiet when we arrived, there were only nine people staying over, including ourselves!
A member of staff took us up to the 30 bed dorm room in the middle of the island and gave us two bunk beds in an area partitioned off from the rest. That was nice to know we still had some privacy. We had nice clean comfy beds, the only negative so far was the fact we were back to cold showers again but we didn't care that much, hopefully the next coming days would stay as warm and beautiful as today.
We threw our bags down and stood on the balcony overlooking the lunch area. We could see the sea from every direction we looked in, it was beautiful! Day trippers queued up for the barbecue below us, the food looked and smelled great so we went down to get some ourselves. And it really was as good as it looked! Just then Brynie, one of the girls we met earlier on Beachcomber came over to say hello, she was the nicer girl of the group. We chatted while we ate lunch then decided to go snorkelling together afterwards. Chris spotted lots of baby reef sharks as soon as we stepped into the sea. Brynie was excited because she hadn't seen a shark before. There were so many of them! We watched them from under the water for a while then started to snorkel all the way around the island. Chris swam under a rock, for a moment I thought he would get stuck but he didn't, then I tried to swim under one but caught my heel coming up.
It took longer than we thought and it was really interesting to see the different corals that dominated sections around the island. We saw lots of star fish everywhere! There was also a lot of dead coral caused by the floods that happened on the main island in February last year. The muddy and polluted water from the mainland deposited sediment all over the corals, restricting the sunlight from them and causing them to die. That would explain why there was so much dead coral washed up on the beaches.
As we carried on around the island Chris suddenly signalled to me under water to look to my left. I can't believe I almost missed the huge shoal of green and blue parrot fish! Not to mention hear them, they were munching away at the living coral destroying everything that came in their path, we have never seen so many parrot fish together, there must have been hundreds of them! After snorkelling me and Brynie sunbathed until it was time for her to leave. Chris was bored so took a walk, he couldn't go far and in fact if it wasn't for the small building in the middle of the island I would have been able to see him where ever he went lol. He went in the pool on his own for a bit, drank tea then came and joined me again. I asked whats up and he said he wasn't ready to start sunbathing yet, I told him he better get ready because thats all there is to do on the island!
Later in the afternoon the day trippers left the island and the newbies arrived, all five of them! We got showered and grabbed two big bean bags and sat on the beach with a cocktail and beer and watched the sun set. It was beautiful and a really nice way to end the afternoon, something we could definitely get used to. We started talking to a welsh girl called Jodie while we waited for dinner to be called. She was a nice girl, a bit nutty though. She waffled on about finding herself while traveling on her own. She reminded us of a guy we over heard on a bus months ago, he said he wished to be involved in a natural disaster so he could experience a life changing moment and find himself too! Selfish p****didn't think about all the hurt and damage it would cause to others though did he. Anyway she wasn't like him, like I said she was just a bit nutty.
The table for dinner was set up outside and lit up by candles and lanterns, it was really nice. We got chatting to the rest of the guests. There were some very interesting people and we loved listening to the two teachers talk about their travel stories but their school children stories were even more hilarious!
Dinner was very nice, roast chicken, potato wedges, carrots. After we took part in crab racing. I teased the hell out of my crab thinking it would get him all revved up. One of the crabs was a monster! It pinched Chris and he said it actually hurt! The crab had a hole in his shell where his eyes popped out from, looked like a little cartoon crab. The crabs were placed in the middle of a large circle then released. I think mine had gone into shock from me prodding him because he was the only one that waited until all the others had left the ring, then darted out coming second to last! Chris's was just in front of mine and the winners were a couple who decided to take part but not pay because they thought three dollars was too much! So one of the teachers Naomi won instead, her crab came second. Naomi won a bottle of wine and shared it out with us all which was nice of her, then Chris got a free beer from the guy that came second.
We sat up for an hour chatting and listening to the teachers some more, they made us laugh until we cried with more of their teaching stories. The staff kept calling us to join them drinking kava but we were all knackered by then so all went to bed early.
