I hate waking up with the taste of last nights rum in my mouth, my dry furry tongue was desperate for water this morning! I could smell the alcohol seeping through my pores, I have the same conversation with myself every time, I ask "Why do I have to drink so much!? Im not drinking anymore." I answer "You did it because it was fun and yes you will so stop whining. God I stink!"
7:30am and I can't believe I'm up! I held my head as I wobbled over to the sink to brush my teeth, suddenly I start remembering flashes of last night, I hope I didn't embarrass myself. Once I was able to hold my head up properly I actually didn't feel that bad, usually all it takes is a big poo and the hangover is gone. Chris like usual didn't feel that bad, he will never miss breakfast so dragged me to the resturant by 8am.
We both really fancied a good fry up with bacon, eggs and beans, instead all we got were pancakes, sweet bread and dough balls! Some people piled there plates up with the stuff. Hello? Heart attack on a plate! I had one small pancake and a little bit of fruit, lunch was five hours away so I should have eaten more.
Alex, Mibs, Steve and Emma went to swim in some caves this morning. We didn't think it sounded that interesting so decided to chill out lazing in some hammocks outside our room. We didn't really notice how nice the resort was yesterday, we were too occupied in getting drunk! There are two beaches, one is good for snorkelling and has a white sandy beach with plenty of hammocks for swinging in, while the other beach is on the resturant side and is stoney. When the tide is low all the rocks and corals are on show.
Chris needed to do some money transfers so left me in the room. Peter came over and advised me that our private room with ensuite would be available after lunch time and asked us to leave the room by 10am for new guests. Chris was going to be a while so I started packing up our stuff. Suddenly one of the fijian staff came in and looked at me confused, then walked out again. There were a few of them moving beds about in the dorm room next door. The next thing I knew Peter was outside moaning at the staff telling them that they had done everything wrong! He was very rude to them and it didn't seem to matter that I could hear him. It turned out that they had put a bed in the room next door when they should have put it in the room we were in. Peter left and the staff were already moving stuff into our room before I could move all our bags outside on to the decking. I don't blame them, I think Peter intimidates them.
Later on the guys came back from their cave trip, we asked them how it went. Emma and Steve said it wasn't worth it so we were glad we didn't go, although Alex and Mibs said they enjoyed it. We sat in the restaurant and Mibs showed off two bracelets he found hanging up in the cave, we all took the piss saying he stole them, someone probably left them there on purpose while they were swimming in the cave and were probably collecting them later! He still kept them.
I was starving by lunch time, it seemed to take forever to come around and what a let down. It was ok but not very filling, just a few super noodles and veg. I thought it was a starter at first. I wondered how Chris was going to manage!
After lunch Peter asked us if we wanted to watch a coconut demo, we weren't sure what it was but we thought why not. We all followed him around the back of the restaurant and into the gardens. A member of staff was waiting to show us how they get the coconuts down and then open them up. Using nothing but his hands and feet we all watched in amazement as the man climbed up the coconut tree, cut off a few and safely climbed back down again. Now I had seen men climb coconut trees in a documentary before but they always used a thick piece of rope or fabric to wrap around the tree! He offered us all to have a go. It was very funny, Chris and the guys couldn't get more than half a meter up the tree! I shouted "I bet I can do it!" Then ran over to the smallest tree I could see and gave it a big hug.
Afterwards the guy showed us how to open a coconut with his machete. For some this was a first time while me and Chris have had plenty of coconuts. We both remembered the time we kept walking up to a bar in Costa Rica, we had one after the other of fresh coconuts mixed with rum inside.
We all had a coconut each to drink then they showed us how they made coconut milk by scraping it out when it's dry then squeezing the moisture out after. It was pretty cool but not as cool as watching one of the staff chop open a coconut with his bare hands! If done correctly it only takes one hit! It took the guy two tries but he still did it! Chris was going to have a go but kept making up excuses, he was worried he would break something in his hands due to too many rugby injuries! I would have loved to have seen him do it but he was probably right.
We all thanked the guy for showing us his skills then walked back to the restaurant. The tide was high and we all stood staring out to sea, suddenly Chris asked Peter about a white square floating about seventy meters away. He wanted to know what it was for or if there was anything in it. Peter didn't say anything for a moment then asked the boys to guess. Chris asked if it was a crab or fish net? He was wrong, then Alex asked if it was for octopuses? He was also wrong. Then it became a game for Peter. He said they could both have a free beer if they could guess correctly what it was with only ten guesses between them, they had already used up two. They weren't sure so they started walking into the sea then swam over to it to get a closer look. Peter was laughing and was sure they wouldn't get it. Mibs then came up with another guess which was wrong then asked if there was a golf course on the island? Peter said yes and Mibs guessed it was for hitting golf balls in. He was right. It was really funny because he didn't have to swim out. Peter told us all not to say anything and ruin the game.
We watched as Chris picked up the square, they both looked really confused. After a few minutes they swam back, they were still unsure. They couldn't get it and came up with some really stupid ideas. Peter reminded me not to tell Chris or give away any clues. I told Peter I wasn't going to, I was enjoying watching Chris get frustrated! lol. Then Chris got close by asking if it was for shooting a ball in? I quickly said he's not specific enough and Peter asked him to be. Chris came up with water polo or kicking a rugby ball in! They had used up all their guesses and neither of them got a beer, instead smug Mibs got one.
By 4:20pm the tide was out, Peter pointed out a little green hut on the other side of the beach to us. He said we could buy tea, coffee and cake for just $5 if we wanted. Of course we couldn't turn down cake! So we all walked through the shallow sea, over the sand and over to a lady happy to see us.
It was really nice, we sat on benches facing out to sea. I was starving so couldn't wait to eat, strangely Chris was ok! We both had chocolate cake which was so good, it was really moist. It was nice to know that the $5 was going straight into the lady's pocket and nothing to do with the resort.
We must have sat chatting there for at least and hour and half until the sun went down. It was a nice sunset but we didn't have our camera and neither of us were about to run back. I started to notice the mozzies and got paranoid about getting bitten so asked to go back. We walked across the sand again and were followed by a cute dog called Snoopy. He ran along crunching up every crab he came across, then showed off by climbing and jumping off steep hills to avoid walking along the sand. As soon as we got to our restaurant Snoopy darted across the sand back to his home within seconds!
We got showered and changed and went for dinner at 7:30pm, again the food wasn't bad but it was nothing special. Our starter was a very shallow bowl of watery soup with a few packet noodles floating in it. I think they used the water from the noodles themselves! Despite the food not being great, we all left our plates clean, breakfast seemed a long way a way!
The staff put on a performance which made up for the poor food, their performance was to teach us a little bit about their fijian culture. They dressed up in warrior and ceremony outfits, each person starting with the chief was introduced to us, he had two body guards on him. Afterwards they put on two dances, one was a warrior dance. The staff got really into it and put on a good show. Next up was a dance performed by the Flying Foxes. I could see a shadow outline of what I thought were women at first, then two guys walked out dressed as women! It was strange that no women were working at the resort and were not included in their performance, we thought there must have been a reason for this, one of the guys was Danny. They also put on a good show and really enjoyed dancing.
We stayed up talking until 10:30pm, a film was put on by projector but the sound was from a laptop so it wasn't very loud. Some people were talking loudly on the table behind us so we couldn't really hear what was being said so we said good night and went off to bed early.
