Week 5- Vietnam (Da Nang) Day 4
Today we wanted to go and see the lady Buddha which is a very big famous statue in Danang that looks over the whole city and beach. After bargaining with about 3 cab drivers none of which could speak any English so we had to draw pictures to try and show where we wanted to go. Eventually we got there! Lady Buddha was beautiful, and the views were absolutely amazing actually felt like you were on top of the world standing up there. After a good photo sesh we headed down towards the beach to see what that looked like then went to see the Dragon bridge which is a famous bridge in Danang over Han river. Seeing the dragon bridge was pretty cool, at weekends the dragon breathes out fire too! Unfortunately we will miss that. We got lunch from the bakery on the way back we had a baguette and char bought some cakes for us to try which cost under £1! We then went to Danang train station to book tickets for Saturday to Hue which was an experience in itself, Asian people have NO concept of queuing what so ever and were pushing in front of us so char got her elbows out and starting pushing her way through too. We managed to book the tickets easily enough after that cost about £2.50. Next on the agenda was a trip to the supermarket. The supermarket is at the top of a massive shopping centre. When we got to the supermarket there was security on the door that stopped us and wanted our bags to put them in plastic bags. We were highly confused by this whole saga but another tourist reassured us that it was normal. They put you bag in a plastic bag and then staple the bag together and you aren't allowed to take the plastic bag off until you are at the tills ready to pay! I think there would be an uproar if this happened in sainsburys back home! I got super excited as there was a aisle of CEREAL!! I had to contain by excitement and try not to buy too much! Charlotte tried to look for salt and vinegar Pringles but was unsuccessful and has now decided that Asia does not do salt and vinegar, I think salt and seaweed was the closest we have got and they were vile. We were both quite excited to be in a supermarket strangely! Char managed to get her shower gel and shampoo and conditioner so she was looking forward to washing her hair tonight! I also bought the best prawn crackers I have probably have fresh from the bakers for about 15p! Once you paid for your items you then went through another security checkpoint where he checked your receipts and bags, we came to the conclusion that there must be quite a high level of theft in Danang supermarkets! Tonight we had a walk down to the river to Bach Dang street, which is well known for the bars and restaurants along the river. There were quite a few fancy hotels and restaurants but not as many bars as expected. We realised that the dragon bridge was lit up in the evening and changed colours which was quite cool to see! The was a group of people playing tug of war down by the river too! We ate at a little restaurant by the river which was Vietnamese/Thai cuisine. I had a chicken soup which was quite spicy and I tried sweet cabbage which was very tasty. Char had chicken with cashew nuts and morning glory with garlic, both trying to stay away from noodles and rice but chars meal ended up coming with rice *surprise surprise*. But was lovely meal :) we were super full so a nice brisk walk back to the hostel was needed. Da Nang hasn't been our sot favourite of places so we are both super excited for Hoi An tomorrow!
