Guten Freitag! Well, not really as I am once again delinquent in my blogging, but let's pretend.
The other reason we (Ok, Steph, the master planner) chose to stay in Kelheim is because it is just a few kilometers down the Danube from the Weltenburger Kloster, monastery and brewery. So, Friday, this was our plan. We started by finding a small bakery/deli down the road and got some delicious bread, sandwiches and pastries for breakfast and for bringing along in case we got hungry. I, as always, will miss the baked goods and bread when I get home.
From there it was down to the river (so close to our hotel - perfect location on this one!) to get a round-trip ticket to get to the Kloster. This boat was literally pulling away from the pier within SECONDS of its scheduled 11 am departure time. Gotta love Germany. The trip down took about 45 minutes. It's not a fast moving boat and we were going against the current. But a really lovely area. Parts would probably remind those of you from Wisconsin of the Dells. Random cliff like areas, big boulders. It was nice to get some breeze and enjoy some scenery and quiet.
Once we got to the abbey, everyone flooded off the boat and up to the main building. Which it turns out holds a restaurant, gift shop, hotel, church, museum and brewery. We really couldn't tell if the monastery was in that same complex or if it is removed. All we know is that's not open to the public. So, we checked out the church and there was actually a service of some sort going on. We're at the point of the trip where 2.5€ just doesn't seem worth it anymore for a museum (you know you've been there if you've traveled to Europe!, so we skipped that. We did head up the hill to another small chapel and overlook of the Danube before heading back down to have a bier in the biergarten. Of course!
We were back on the boat by about 2 pm, after Erica and Steph dipped their toes in the Danube, and went into siesta mode after we returned to town. We have become very accustomed to a lot of sleep, thank you. :) After that we took a walk to a pizzeria that was highly recommended on Trip Advisor. This took us out of the old city for the first time, basically, and it was a little weird to get there, but it was SO worth it. Delicious food, so inexpensive, and so fast! Wood fired margarita pizza, caprese salad, green salad...yum! After walking back to town, we decided we needed to partake in a German tradition we were not aware of. GIANT ICE CREAM CREATIONS. Seriously, in Kelheim there were more places (and they were the busiest we saw!) where they just served random ice cream concoctions than bars or biergarten type places. We went all out and each got our own...and I definitely was incapable of finishing mine. But they were all delicious, and we're going to have to find a way to get my mom warm raspberries to put on ice cream on a regular basis or I fear she may shrivel and die. :)
From there, it was "home" for one last night at the Dormero hotel. I've included a picture of their weird sense of humor in the form of a Do Not Disturb door hanger.
