Hallo! This entry is coming from Erica - naturally the mother of two (whiny, sassy) princesses should write the blog about the castle.
So WOW did it feel good to sleep in this morning... a full 10 hours of sleep after a nearly-comatose I-don't-know-how-many hours awake (plus some German bier to add to the deliriousness?) ... amazing. We got up and to the train station by 9, where we explored the very commuter-friendly offerings and discovered the best sandwiches of all time in the understated cases of train station cafes.
We met Aiden, our tour guide for the day, who shepherded us to our train and gave us the history of eccentric King Ludwig II and his fairytale castle (Neuschwanstein). The train ride was beautiful through the German countryside and we saw goats and hillsides and quaint flower boxes and milk cows wearing actual cowbells around their necks! Bavaria made good on all the German stereotypes we hold so dear.
We made it to the village below the castle and oohed and ahhhed at it from a distance - and then were instructed to CLIMB. Climb uphill in the heat and humidity, dodge piles of poo from the horse-drawn wagons, weave and bob amongst the throngs of visitors, if you want to see it. And we nodded and cheered and willingly walked up a long and steep(ish) path to "crazy" King Ludwig II's fairytale castle - worth it!! The views were amazing and the castle was fascinating and beautiful. Only 1/3rd of the castle's interior was ever even finished, yet over 1 million people a year visit it. Nice work becoming the inspiration for Disney's beloved logo, Ludwig, impressive.
After a little shopping and snacking, we headed back to the train and to Munich - very tired but very happy! We asked Aiden for a recommendation for pizza (so the girls would actually eat something) and he directed us to place right in the train station that had surprisingly good pizza (und bier). After dinner the grown ups got beers from the hotel vending machine (LOVE YOU GERMANY) and finished up the day in the lobby reconnected to our beloved WiFi. And slept incredibly well after a long day of German site-seeing!
Tomorrow Jen arrives, yay!
