We are staying with Patty and Fred just outside of Mammoth Lakes, CA. In 2001, I started working as an educational assistant in Patty's preschool special needs classroom at Mammoth Elementary. By 2003, I had gotten my teaching credential and started teaching K, 1, 2 special education at Mammoth Elementary. We took a little trip down memory lane as we drove through Mammoth today. I took the kids to the elementary school where I taught and showed Bodie my former classroom. We also spent some time on the schools three playgrounds!
Fred is the Fire Chief for the Long Valley Fire Department which encompasses a fairly large area. On the drive to Cali, we talked about meeting Fireman Fred and staying at his house. Both boys were very excited to learn they'd be staying at a fireman's house. They were a little nervous too but soon got over it once they met him. This morning Fred took us on a tour of the fire station. The boys got to climb into several different trucks and learned about all the gear and equipment. Then Fred took us on a ride. I don't think Carson's eyes could get any bigger! He was so overwhelmed at riding in that truck, then the sirens went on and that just floored him! It was such a great experience!
We relaxed most of the afternoon, played a bit on a nearby playground, and did laundry. Tomorrow we will leave here and hope to find a campsite in Yosemite. If we're lucky, we will score a spot if not, momma will have to search for an alternative. If all else fails, we can come back to Mammoth. It's only about an hour and a half from here!
