After a leisurely breakfast of fruit loops, we went down into Bishop. Bishop sits in a huge valley surrounded by the Sierra Nevada Mountains on the west and the White Mountains on the east. There is a ton of climbing and hiking here! We went up the west side of the valley into an area called the Buttermilks (probably named for the old dairy farms). It is a desert landscape of sage brush and white gravelly sand. In the end of July, it's also very hot. The landscape is littered with huge boulders that stick out against the brilliant blue sky. I took a ton of pictures as we hiked. We started out looking for crystals but the boys felt every rock they saw was a crystal. Bodie filled his fanny pack with little rocks and bullet casings while Carson filled my backpack with bigger rocks. Then they got into climbing the rocks and hunting for lizards. Three hours later we were very hot and tired so we headed back into Bishop for some lunch. We went to the city park where Bodie found trees to climb and Patty brought us bread to feed the ducks. As we headed back towards Patty's house, we detoured along the Owens River Gorge to peek over the rim at the enormous drop off. The trail to the bottom of the gorge is rather steep and will be saved for when the boys are a tad bigger. By afternoon it was 100*F. We were hot, dirty, thirsty and tired. Boys slept as we drove back to Patty's for showers and a break. Then we went up to Rock Creek Lake where Fred made us a campfire as the boys played in the ice cold water. We had s'mores then headed back for dinner... Another vacation perk: dessert before dinner! Quite a day, my little troopers did great again and fell asleep quickly!
