Hello. It's been a while since the last time I wrote, and that's because my friend, Michala, from Denmark has been here the last two weeks. She went back home this Wednesday. We've been on the same trip I have been on a couple of times now - Kurger National Park (safari) and Blyde River Canyon (both in South Africa). It is a very beautiful and exciting trip and the nature and countryside of South Africa is just fantastic! I have uploaded some of my pictures here on the blog from the previous trip, but there are even more on Facebook (also from this trip) :-)
We saw lots of animals of course, and we even had a HUGE spider sitting right on the car!! For two city-girls that is a big, scary thing. We were inside the car and I was driving when I suddenly saw this tarantula on my window! I stopped the car and we just sat there screaming at each other and didn't know what to do. Haha. We tried to pour water on it, but we never found out if it left the car... About 10 minutes after the spider-incident we were driving down a small dirtroad and saw some elefants with babies too. 'Cute' we thought. Until one of them turned towards the car and started to run!!! I hit the gas and we were screaming and were deadly scared while we rushed from the elefant! Wow. We also saw the leopard and cheetah this time, but unfortunately no lions. But we had a lot of great and fun experiences (and scary, crazy ones as well)!
We were gone for four days and after that we came back to Maputo and the week after we went to Inhaca, which is a small island 2½ hours from Maputo. I hadn't been there before, but just heard about it. It was SO beautiful and really exotic! Crystal-clear, turqouise water with corals and white sandy beaches. Paradise. We stayed there for two nights (Tuesday-Thursday) and it was raining all Wednesday. So we got two lovely days on the beach and a nice, cosy day in the cabin, playing cards, listening to music, talking and reading. Great quality-time! :-)
Otherwise we have been here in the city, we went out one night with some friends, which was a great night! We have been to the crafts-market, where they have great craftworks and a lot of souvenirs.
Since Michala left I haven't been doing much yet. Unfortunately I've been sick this weekend with a little fever, so I haven't been doing much. I was supposed to babysit a six-year-old on Saturday (which we also did last Saturday) but I was not feeling too good, so I cancelled. Today was a little better, so we went to Clube Naval (our fitness club, where there's also a pool and a restaurant). Just got a little fresh air, sun, and a swim in the pool. Tomorrow I'm gonna start with some volunteer work. There is a center for street kids here in the city, where they have taken the boys in from the streets and provided them with food and a shelter. The only rule is that they cannot go back onto the streets again. There are about 25 boys and their ages go from 5-19. They are really happy to have some white, young people come and play with them and entertain them during the day. Since they're not well educated we thought we might teach them some English. The older boys are really interested in learning English, so that's great. They are really sweet but also a little crazy because they're been taking in from the streets they have no comic and rational sense. So we might have to teach them that as well. It might be quite a challange, but I'm looking foward to it.
Right now we have the aircondition on, it is so hot here now. I hope you are all doing good and you can always write to me if you wanna hear about anything in particular or just let me know how you are doing, I would love hearing from some of you as well :-)
Love,
Chanel
