Quesadillas for dinner. No biggie hey we are in Mexico. As the man in the restaurant decants the menu for us he reads out the fillings. Pork cheese mushroom grasshopper chicken... Wait what. Grasshopper quesadilla? Our sick curiosity causes us to order some.
It is a funky overpriced cafe so naturally the food takes forever to come out and by then we are absolutely starving. Julies meal come out first a nice simple spaghetti dish. Then not to long after the dish to talk about came out.
From the outside it looked delicious with the tortilla folded over and the cheese melting out the side. I ordered 2 mushroom and one grasshopper and Michael had ordered 2 grasshopper and a goats cheese. Well it was the wrong way around so I for the 2 grasshopper. We ended up splitting it so we both had one and a half grasshopper.
Opening up the quesadilla the truth dawned upon us that we were actually eating creepy crawlies. Hundreds of these bugs smothered in cheese were staring us down.
First bite in not so bad. They don't really taste like much just a bit crunchy. Michael then told me to eat a grasshopper on it's own. The exoskeleton was crunchy and when u got to the insides that sort or squeezed out as u chewed it was sort of sweet and sour. Together with the crunch it started to taste a little like an inscence stick smells. Sandalwood maybe?
Anyway it was an experience. Probably not one that I would want to encounter on a regular basis but a story to tell none the less :)
