Got off the plane today after traveling for 50 hours or so. After checking in and a bit of breakfast we go upstairs and sleep. 4pm rolls around and we decide we should prob get up if we were going to sleep tonight.
Lucha libre (mexican wrestling) only occurs on tues and Sunday so if we wanted to go tonight should be the night.
We meet the group in the foyer and the guide takes us around the corner to a traditional pulque bar. What can I say... It was very Mexican.
There is a group of 8 and we order some jugs to share. Pulque is tequilla before it is distiller and aged. It has a similar consistency of raw eggs but the flavors were pretty good.
I couldn't get over the texture. So thick and slimy.
Then we make our way to the arena. Hawkers selling merchandise completely ignore us(like mist places) and we were the only tourists I saw.
We go inside and it's not nearly as busy as I thought it would be. People surround the ring and the are ppl running around fetching beers danger cornchips and taking bets.
The lucha libre itself involves 6 people fighting in a ring. 3 good 3 bad, sort of like teams. There are three rounds and between each round a scantily clad women holds up a round # sign. Pretty sure most of the meh got more excited about this more than the fight.
I started to fail after the first round and was getting super tired. The second round was women and one of the team had a giant lady that took everyone out in the end.
As the rounds proceeded the fighting got more intense. The last round involved tiny speedos and a lot of body oil.
The fights themselves involved a lot of gymnastic ability and falling in style however they didn't hit each other very hard and it looked rather staged.
It can't be too fake sue to the fact that 15 people have been killed it the last 5 years.
Saying that I still believe it the be the baby of WWE and connies on a Saturday night :)
