Melbourne Road Trip
Well me made it to Melbourne and back in our camper vans. 8 of us set off on Tuesday to cover the 1100 km to melbourne. What a great adventure we had - lovely beaches and plenty of fluffy wild life and not the kind that want to kill you.
Our first stop was a beautiful place in some national park a few hours south of sydney. We managed to time it brilliantly so that it just started raining and was almost dark - pefect for pitching up our tents!!! It was picth black but we managed to find the beach using the 2 torches that we had with us ( seriously good planning ). Although we couldnt see much it sounded amazing and the sand was oh so white.
That night our 2 vans participated in Possum watch as we were literally invaded by them. The first time was hilarious as one just leaped from the dark to grab some pasta that was dropped. After that we watched them for a good hour and laughed at the girls as they screamed as they attempted to get into our vans. Amazing night.
On returning from the toilet block in the picth black, I heard a rustling in a bush so as you can imagine I acted all manly and screamed "what the f**k was that!" - only to be confronted by a man with a torch. Much relief.
That night we were subjected to very strong winds trying to blow us out to sea - oh and we slept on what felt like rocks. When we awoke in the morning it was quick to see that we had not prepared for this trip as we were all shivering. However we were soon visited by a kangaroo (who love cheesy puff crisps ) - amazing to be able to stroke one of these animals.
Day 2 we drove onto Eden which had an amazing beach - it really couldnt be named any better. After that we carried along the coast until we reached Melbourne on Friday. It sure was nice to reach civilisation again after spending the previous days driving through forests which were rather boring. Road trip games proved to be both fun and eye opening - you really get to know people during these games.
Melbourne was FREEZING and WET - and as you can imagine none of us had winter clothes which only made things worse. Our campsite proved to be more of a village green in a trailer park so not the best. Still atleast we were not shot at all!
Friday night we ventured into Melbourne on the eve of the biggest game of the year for aussie rule - the grand final which this year was to be between 2 teams from melbourne. Everywhere and everyone was wearing their colours - such a good atmosphere just like being in the pub before the footy on a saturday. It was also nice to have our first proper meal in ages!!!
Saturday we ventured down to St Kilda to meet up with 3 of the girls who were now in a hostel. By now we had chosen which team to cheer on and purchased our hats and scarves. Most of us plumped for St Kilda's Saints however the blues amongst us went for Geelong Cats. The atmosphere in the pub was amazing. The aussies friendly to explain to us the rules of this alien game. But what a game - I am so going to be attending some games next year - end to end carnage but genuine excitement.
We lost. Bad times.
We had a few more drinks then shivered all the way back to our campsite. We set off early as we had to get back to Sydney that night. So we said goodbye to Louise, Emmy & Evelyn as they were staying in Melbourne and set off.
Our return route was shorter but so dull. Funny how the aussies seem to stick to the speed limit - needless to say we strecthed it a little.... It wasnt a race to get back to sydney... however we won.
