Israel Trip Day 12
Wednesday 3/14/18
We arose early once again so we could be on the bus by 7:15 am to head out to the Herodium, another hideout for the schizophrenic King Herod! Even though it was only 7.5 miles from Jerusalem it took about 40 minutes to get there due to the terrible Jerusalem traffic! Once again it was another incredible fort built high atop a hill overlooking Bethlehem & the mount of olives in Jerusalem! Unlike the cable car we rode up to Masada, we had to climb a gravel path to reach the top here! Once again Herod had outdone himself by building a pool with a little gazebo in the middle! Our guide, Ron, jokingly told us Herod would float up to one side to order McDonalds, another to order KFC, etc! Ron had such a great sense of humor! Once again there were many uneven stairs & tunnels we went through as we explored The Herodium! Herod’s tomb was here however the Jewish people disliked him so much that they destroyed this tomb! As we walked down the uneven steps we came out along a side of the mountain & still had to hike the gravel path back to where we had started! We left here to head to the Israeli museum where we had seen the model of old Jerusalem on our first day here! We went in to see the Dead Sea scrolls & then had about 45 minutes to explore the rest of the museum! Our bus then transported us to the Joppa Gate where we entered the old city to do some souvenir shopping! After finishing our shopping we caught a shuttle bus to our hotel! We finished our packing as our bus was taking us to the airport in Tel Aviv immediately after our farewell dinner! We went up to the dining room after packing & enjoyed our last evening with our bus 11 group friends! After saying goodbye to our new friends we boarded the bus to the airport with our luggage & headed out for Tel Aviv! Once there our guides helped us navigate their crazy check in procedures! Our luggage weighed in at 1 kg less than the limit so we were very lucky that we didn’t go over the limit & have to pay extra! While waiting for the plane, James & I tried to catch up this blog! We boarded the plane at 12:15 am & settled in for our long flight! The flight was smooth for the most part however I had a cute little 2 year old next to me & she did not want to sit quietly for anyone to sleep so I didn’t get much rest on that flight! I’m sitting here at JFK trying to finish up this blog while I wait for our flight to Minneapolis & then on to Kansas City! Almost home!!!!
