Israel Trip Day 11
Tuesday 3/13/18
Once again that alarm went off way too early! However we slowly got up & had breakfast & headed out for our tour of the garden tomb! Even though we had a communion service here last night we didn’t have time to look around & actually see the tomb! We learned that Jesus was crucified at the place of the skull & we saw a hill very near the tomb that had a rock formation that looked like a skull! The garden area was very pretty! We saw the tomb & had the opportunity to go in it to see where they had laid his body! There was no stone by this doorway into the tomb—I don’t know what had happened to it— but there was a cross etched into the stonework by the tomb! I felt deeply emotional to think about the sacrifice Jesus made for me through his death & resurrection!
From here we traveled across town to the Holocaust Museum! We had a short devotional by the tree that was planted in remembrance of Corrie Ten Boom’s life! Then we were free to go throughout the museum on our own! It was very moving especially when we went through the children’s part of the museum! In that section we walked in near darkness while the photos of children who lost their lives rotated above our heads & a voice kept saying the names of each child along with their age! It’s almost incomprehensible how anyone could be so cruel!
After lunch we headed to the City of David! We began our tour by going to the balcony where he most likely caught his first glimpse of Bathsheba! Then we saw a very cool 3D movie about David’s reign! As our tour continued, we walked down many uneven steps & through several tunnels (some very narrow)! We learned that the Gihon Springs were very close to his palace in fact so close they were used as a source of water for his palace! Our tour of the city of David ended by the pool of Siloam. We had another devotional time here before completing our tour! Even though the hike through David’s city was strenuous, it was also very informative & interesting!
From here we were taken back to our hotel to have dinner & get ready to board the busses to go to our evening concert with David Phelps! David presented an awesome concert which included some songs accompanied by his 17 year old son on the guitar! Speaking of accompanists, his regular accompanist on both piano & guitar is his wife’s cousin whose name is—Jack Daniels—no kidding! The entire concert was great! He is such a talented man!
I know by now that you must be wondering why it seems like some days we don’t have a lot going on! The reason for this is the traffic in Jerusalem! There are so many large busses (our group alone had 14 busses) and all the other cars trucks & vans & scooters on the road! The scooters weave in & out around the other traffic & make it extremely dangerous for the other drivers! I have never before seen a big city like this that has so much traffic! Our bus drivers were incredible as they navigated through all this traffic with ease! Sometimes a site we were going to visit might only be 5-7 miles away but it would take 45 minutes or longer to get there!
