another week down... this semester is really flying by! it seems like its going even faster because they count the weeks here. so we"re already finished "week three", and vacation starts week 8.
last weekend bill and i ventured up to kent to go check out leed's castle. it was a ton of fun! we got to wander the castle itself, part of which is set up to look old, and part of which is left in the style of the last owner. someone lived there right up until the 20's or 30's, which is really cool to think about. imagine having a castle all to yourself and your daughters? so cool. after we walked inside the castle, we headed over to the maze and the grotto. there's a hedge maze that we wandered around, trying to get to the center. at the center you head down underground and walk through these cool, dark tunnels that they call "the grotto". it was the most beautifully decorated place, with shells and rocks used to make mosaics all over all the walls. there were carvings in some places too.
the castle took up the entire day on saturday. we left on the bus to london at 6:30 in the morning, and got back to winchester around 9:30. but it was definitely worth it! i've been recommending it to all the other americans as a great day trip.
the school week was pretty uneventful. i actually had some work to do this week, so homework and school took up a lot of time. and bill and i spent every spare second we had working on our plans for easter break. planning a month long vacation is a lot of work!
we've got pretty much everything under control now. all the flights are done, the hostels are all set. its just figuring out the money that we'll have for spending that's taking up our time now. when we have the itinerary all set i'll be sure to post it on here! we're hitting up 10 cities in 8 countries! at orientation all the staff joked about how american students try to break the record for the most traveling ever during easter break, and i think we're living up to that. but why not? we're only here once!
friday night we got to have a small little adventure. our academic advisor, roger, (here called our "personal tutor") has a lot of american students as his advisees. he's the one who travels to america to recruit students, so he ends up with a lot of them i think. he invited seven of us to his house last night for tea! it was pretty cool. we all had to take the bus to get there, and the "tour guide" english student that roger had invited had never actually taken a bus in winchester before... haha. but he had just come back from a semester in wisconsin, so roger invited him along because he would have some common things to talk about with us. when we arrived at his house it was so great! we all sat around eating scones and tea sandwiches and drinking tea. something pretty common here, but totally new to all of us! it was a lot of fun, and we stayed for a few hours.
that's all that's really been going on here. nothing too terribly exciting i'm afraid. but i figured i'd give you all an update!
