(I apologize for the sudden lack of apostrophes. My computer is being silly.)
On Wednesday the 2nd of May Bill and I took a day trip to Portsmouth, England. The Student Union was sponsoring it, and it only cost 2 pounds each for the round trip. We headed out from the university at 10:30 in a little mini-bus with a half dozen other people. After a 45 minute ride we were in Porstmouth, right on the water.
The bus dropped us off at a place called Gunwharf Quays, which is a big outlet shopping center. We walked around and shopped for a little bit, taking in the sites of the harbor. I bought a shirt, and that was it, since the conversion rate is so awful.Â
We grabbed lunch in a restaurant that was all windows overlooking the water. We had delicious sandwiches made with mexican style food, mine chicken and Bills steak. After that we caught a movie, our first in a theater since weve left the states. "Wild Hogs" is highly recommended for a silly, funny movie. On our way out we ran into some other Americans from Winchester who were also spending the day there, though not through the school.
After the movie we walked down the street and checked out the historical dockyards area. We saw some really old ships, including one of the first iron-clad ships, and the HMS Victory. The Victory is a beautiful ship, and if we had had more time, I would have loved to go inside and take a tour. But, we had to catch our bus back to the school.Â
It was a short day, getting us home around 6, but it was worth it. Its nice to see other parts of England. Weve seen so much of Europe, but not much of this country. This weekend Ill be going to Oxford on Saturday with about a dozen other Americans, and then on Sunday Bill and I will be going to Stonehenge with Jay and another American. (Jay is a friend weve made here. Hes from Texas, but goes to school in Portland, Maine). Pictures and stories will be sure to follow!
