Today we were off sightseeing! Up, breaky on the run and then to the Colosseum. What a way to start the day! The only downer on the Colosseum tour was the wind, closely followed by the rain! Typical that the day we choose to walk around Rome's main attractions turns out to be one of the worst days for weather! So after taking in the magnificence of the Roman amphitheatre, it was on to plan 2. Swap the outdoor stuff we'd planned (Pantheon etc.) for an indoor option.
So we bought our fourth umbrella for the trip and headed for the hotel to add a few layers and change the jumper for a waterproof jacket. Then onto the Rome metro and headed for the Vatican. The Pope was a bit busy (something about being caught up trying to find his replacement), so we had to settle for a stroll through his pad unaccompanied. There's some really amazing art in the Vatican Museum, but unfortunately the Sistine Chapel and a few other rooms were closed due to the changing of the Pope. Still worth the stroll through, but a bit disappointing all the same.
We'd covered quite a few miles on foot today, so by the time we emerged from the Vatican it was time for a panini in the hotel and an early night. Another day of sightseeing tomorrow to catch the things we missed today.
