DAY7 - Melbourne to Phillip Island (163km)
With all of our washing done, some free time on the internet and a hearty breakfast of bacon and eggs (many thanks to Mark and Cath) off we head to Phillip Island in search of the Baby Penguins... Sadly it wasn't all it is advertised to be we could only just make them out waddling up the beach. Probably not disappointing for the owners though as there were probably about 2,000 tourists so takings of $40,000, not bad for a few concrete steps (for us to sit on) and a bloke with a microphone. I felt sorry for the penguins!! Philip Island was very similiar to the Isle of Wight, sadly the weather wasn't as good as I have experienced in the Isle of Wight, but maybe with the sun out and if I hadn't been so spoilt recently with amazing places I would have enjoyed it more?? Still I left feeling slightly perplexed as to why Kylie Minogue would have bought property on this island??
DAY8 - Phillip Island to Lakeside Entrance (366km)
A drive along the coast, staying firmly away from the bushfires, although from 25km we could see the flames and smoke from Wilsons Prom! Most of the day today we spent in the car so I will take the opportunity to share with you some general Australia travelling observations....
"If you drink and drive you are a bloody idiot!!" No joke, an actual sign that is found quite often on the side of the road.
"We drive on the left in Australia" A true statement, but odd when you see it in the middle of nowhere which means you would have had to be driving on the wrong side for 000's of Km's??
"Wrong way, turn back" A sign you often see halfway down the carriageway on the other side of the road, thankfully we saw none on our side of the rd!
And finally, on their rego plates they have a little slogan about the state they are from. eg: VICTORIA - the Place to be! I think interstate competition is big over here. I came up with one for Western Oz "Where weird is normal"
DAY10 - Lakes Entrance to Merimbula (274km)
After a morning of driving through yet more in the middle of nowhere towns and yet again wondering what people do for a living out here. We arrive in our campsite for lunch and decide to chill out by the pool for the afternoon. The evening brings with it a new card game called Quibble (effectively scrabble on cards), Linda and Brent from Nottingham and lots of wine! Linda get's so drunk she falls off her chair.
DAY11 - Merimblua
We decide to head out fishing.. I think maybe we were hoping for a free dinner! I do actually catch 2 fish, which thoroughly annoys Billy as he doesn't get anything. A 1m sting ray swims straight past us and we were glad we didn't accidentally hook him up or our new rod would have been abandoned pretty quickly. We pass hours sat here on the side of the river, watching the wildlife and sometimes feeding the giant pelicans our bait - I was quite suprised with my levels of patience and thoroughly enjoyed the whole day.
DAY12 - Merimbula to Sunshine Beach
Another day of driving, with stops and some of the most stunning lookouts and beaches, too many to mention them all so a special mention for the seaside, lakeside and mountainside town of Narooma which was amazing but impossible to capture in a photo! Turross Head with limestone karsts, Burrewarra Pt and our steak and kidney pie. Another seaside campsite for tonight and some barefoot radlers, australian bottled lager and lime, quite nice actually!
DAY13 - Sunshine Beach to Merry Beach
Probably the best campsite in the world, 20km south from Ulla Dulla recommended to us by a couple we met fishing the other day. Parked up almost in the sand dunes we are that close to the beach. Of course swimming, jumping and body surfing the waves was in order on arrival. Then a walk over the the headland to Pretty beach out onto the jutting rocks into the sea which was stunning. If this wasn't enough, then the evening brought with it a wildlife frenzy, kangaroos everywhere forming an obstacle course to the toilet blocks, monitor lizards that are absolutely huge! Digital blackbirds, well our name for them as they sing like they have a voicebox in their throat (most odd!) and possoms that would eat bread from our hands. I loved it!
