And so commence the injesting of salt water, the bruising, the laughing, the aching and the fun that is the mojo 5 day surf tour in our crazy big black and pink bus. We were so lucky to have only 10 people on the tour this week, a tour that can sometimes have 50 people on it!! well actually we had 11 if you count our multi-talented bus driver and surf instructor ANT - even so it was all good!
Our week was split in 2. Firstly, 2 nights at Spot X our first surf destination about 2.5 hours south of Byron Bay, a little commercial and crazy not helped by the fact that the Oz experience dumped a bus load everyday for their free surf lesson. The beach wasn't spectacular by Australian standards, but good for surfing, apart from the 4ft of seaweed you had to climb over to get into the sea and constantly untangle from your legs and board once in! Yuk... it was great and just a short walk from our little sheds we called home. The food was amazing, served up in school dinner fashion but far better quality which was a good job as we all worked up quite an appetite. After 5 2hr surf lessons we all headed for spot 2, all able to stand and most of us sporting the mojo company hoodie's.
Spot number 2 another 2.5 hours south, really wish I could remember what is was called, but anyhow it was fab. The accomodation really sweet little log cabins with massive bunk beds and loads of space. The food if possible was even better than at the first place, and apart from a few members of staff we were the only people here. The beach was back to Australia stunning style and we were now thankfully free of seaweed but we had inherited some rocks. So I did a great impression of skydiving apparently everytime I wiped out or just fell off to make sure I landed flat in the water hence not hitting the rocks underwater. 5 surf lessons had taken their toll on my knees and arms so I was glad to have the extra protection of a full length wetsuit here, plus it's actually getting a bit cold in the water now. (I'll never be able to swim in England again!!).
The only thing left was then the mammoth bus journey to Sydney after an early morning surf. I have to say the bus ride was a pleasure, we all had about 5 seats each, we watched 12 episodes of friends and a film and stopped when we wanted for breaks. Take note Greyhound!
So in summary, I felt old for most of the week, tried really hard to keep up and actually succeeded. I can now catch most waves that are thrown at me, although I am still playing around on the white frothy stuff, I haven't progressed to big waves out the back yet! Apparently this takes ages. I ache, I'm covered in bruises, scratches and surf board rash, attractive - but I can't wait to do it all again soon. Finally for those who think it is amusing that their big sister decided to try her hand at surfing, all I can say is you just wait, Boscome Surf Reef, Carrie and a board and we'll see if you are still laughing!! I'm not over the hill yet! xx
