Having had a bad night in a not very pleasant hostel we opted to repack and move in the morning, knowing we were staying for a while. Our new hostel Huasi Sol was very homely, with a great bunch of people and we were very glad we had bothered. Just around the corner from the very pretty Plaza 9 de Julio it was in a better location too and almost half the price!
With a day to kill before the Rugby we head out for some people watching, sitting in restaurants and bars and of course sight seeing. Lunch is ridiculously cheap and we get 2 large beers, a plate of empanadas and a pizza for 4 pounds. Full we opt for the gondola ride to the top of the mountain to see the view of Salta from above. Very picturesque and such a lovely day we decide to enjoy it from our seats in a bar for the afternoon! That night we realise we still really aren't good at Spanish when we accidentally order Rose wine to accompany our steak, interesting combo??!
Then it's time for Rugby, Sharon had been looking forward to this day for a year and I was even excited in the build up to it! I could go on and on forever about this day, in fact I wrote about 10 pages in my diary. I will limit this entry to a concise summary though.... I Loved it!! The match was great, even though we lost, I learned loads about Rugby as I constantly bombarded Shazza with questions, the stadium atmosphere was amazing and mexican waves were making it twice round with everyone getting involved!! After the match was even better, the England team threw their shorts out of the team coach for us to try and catch, we invaded the pitch for photos, and then carried on the party with the England Rugby players until the early hours of the morning. I got George Chuters presentation wine, which we have now enjoyed and I have the label stuck for safekeeping in my journal. It was one of the bext days of my whole trip, which I never expected to say!!!
The next day after all of the excitement was mainly filled with sleep!
Then back down to reality, sight seeing, no Rugby. Luckily we had a tour to the clouds booked. Although we are still unsure why it's called to the clouds as we didn't see any clouds?!? Thankfully we chose the slightly more expensive route Purmamarca - Salinas Grandes- San Antonio - 4080m high point - and return to Salta. The scenery in the car was good but it was a very long day for 2 short highlights. The signpost that said we were over 4000m above sea level (it was freezing!!) and the salt flats which were spectacular, very white, very salty and very flat! My wallet stolen today too in the hostel! Rubbish so we went out for Steak as it makes everything better.
Then an overnight bus to Iguazu, the speakers above our heads were crackling all night which was somewhat annoying! Not much sleep. However....we will always think fondly of our time in Salta.
