Bariloche was bigger than we had anticipated, both of us had been expecting a small skiing village similiar to one you would be find in the french alps...but sadly being the biggest ski resort in Argentina it wasn't to be, the town has clearly grown on the back of tourism here. We were in need of spending a few nights somewhere though and this was it, so we caught up on sleep and sorted ourselves out for a few days.
We did manage to get in some sight seeing though, in the form of a visit to a chocolate shop, being Argentinas chocolate capital we felt it was rude not to. A ride up to the top of the mountain for a marvel at the views and a day out in a hire car to meander through the lake district.
5 of us, Anna, Doug, Jeremy, Shazza and I, head out all piled into a Corsa for the day for a 400km round trip to San Martin past the 7 lakes in the area. The drive was simply stunning, once you got over the bumpy, pot hole strewn, muddy lanes. Early morning brought with it low cloud and a mist that sat 1/2 way up the mountains making for some amazing photo opportunities and the afternoon clear blue skies. It was so still that the lakes were like giant mirrors reflecting the scenery around them.
San Martin de Los Andes was much more like the ski resort we had been expecting and we were gutted not to have known about this place before and stayed here for a few days to rest, much more peaceful and apparently where the elite of Argentina come to rest. Sadly we only had time for a submarino, hot milk with a chocolate stick to melt in it, before it was time to head home.
The journey back was up against the timer as we needed to get back to the music shop to pick up a CD of reggaeton that we had ordered, a compilation the nice man in the shop was making with a couple of our anthems of South America on it, for the bargain price of 1 pound 50. As we hit town I drove like a real local, weaving left and right, making up my own lane and over and undertaking other cars and we made it with a whole 2 minutes to spare. Then we cruised around town with our new music pumping trying to find a petrol station before dropping the car back.
Nights in the hostel generally consisted of carton wine called promocion, very classy, card games and group dinners. I made up a new recipe with all of our leftovers one night which turned out to be a really tasty curry and Eefje made an amazing chicken soup. We did, of course, venture out into town to see what it was all about, funnily enough it revolved around an Irish pub and ended in a hangover and a whole day in bed.
Rest over and glad our last day in argentina was such fun, the road trip to the lakes, we eventually tear ourselves away from Argentina and head to Chile to start our mamouth journey to Quito, Equador to join our tour.
