Haven’t written this for ages, but sadly haven’t really been able to do much recently! Felt a bit ill at the beginning of last week, and after a few days Becci decided that me and Zoe should go to the hospital just to make sure that it was nothing serious. We discovered that we both had Dengue fever! It’s passed between people via mosquitoes and as it’s a virus there isn’t any treatment, you just have to rest a lot and leave your immune system to fight it. To make sure that we didn’t pass it on to any of the others and so that we could sleep and eat better we were moved to a hotel in Belmopan. The insurance company agreed to pay for the hotel bill for however long we needed to stay there. So the rest of the week was spent mostly sleeping, eating soup and lots of fresh fruit! On Sunday I finally felt better enough to come back to TEC, although Bart and Becci didn’t seem convinced! Since then have been mainly chilling here, yesterday I felt well enough to go to Belmopan and help Zoe with her project and so spent all day analysing jaguar scat (poo). We’re looking for bones and hair to identify what the jaguars have been eating. Felt exhausted after a day of that so am having a resting day today. Hoping to be back in the field collecting data next week.
In the mean time, the traps at Big Falls have had to be closed as we don’t have enough time or man power to check them everyday and collect everyones data. We’ve cut two new grids for more camera traps to go out.
On Saturday we’re booked to go horse riding, which should be really exciting! Also a very large tarantula has taken up residence in one of the toilets!
