The rain arrived yesterday, and it literally poured down all day! The crocodile pond extended onto the path which was quite amusing as we half expected there to be a crocodile sitting on the path waiting for us as we walked down to dinner. We spent the morning hanging around waiting for Becci to arrive. When she arrived she explained ran through what happens if we catch an animal in one of the traps. The animal has to be sedated to attach the collar and given a general health check. It all sounds pretty exciting and if we're around when they catch an animal then we'll be able to go along and help/watch. Me and Sophie then headed to Big falls with Becci in the rain to remove two of the paca traps. They've decided to recapture the one paca left with a collar on as there isn't much you can do with data from one paca, and hopefully when we open the traps at Big falls we're going to start capturing and collaring a lot more animals. Luckily it had stopped raining when we got to big falls and the transects didn't seem to be any more flooded than before. Although jumping over the puddles becomes a lot more complicated when you're trying to carry a paca cage between two people but we provided a lot of entertainment to Becci and Sayeed who were watching us struggle! The road to Big falls is getting worse with all the rain and the truck got stuck in the mud for a bit but eventually we managed to get out.
Today some of us have gone to set up the paca trap around it's burrow, when they get back we're heading off to big falls to bait the traps and then sophie, ed and me will be staying at the research station there for the night. The traps need checking every hour incase we do catch something so probably won't be getting much sleep. But this is where we're most likely to see something exciting so we might just stay up in the hope that something might wander past the house.
