We had a day off today, so decided to visit the zoo as the other half of the group had been on saturday when we were helping cut transects. The zoo is fairly small and only has native animals which have all been rescued, confiscated or rehabilitated and so none are caught from the wild. Because they're all native animals the enclosures are just fenced off areas of the natural environment. When we arrived we were greeted by one of the zoo keepers who asked us if we wanted to hold a boa constrictor..... so we did! The animals were all really alert and pretty easy to see. The cages were all pretty open, and if you were stupid enough you could have even stuck your fingers through the jaguar cage. We started with feeding, scratching and stroking India the tapir. Also saw spider and howler monkeys (one of which fell out of a tree and looked pretty embarrassed!), deer, margay, ocelot, coatis etc. The peccaries looked absolutely terrifying, smelt really bad and made scary screaming noises which gnashing their teeth together. We decided that these were the animals we least wanted to meet in the jungle! The jaguar was stunning, and we got to see it up close by entering a cage inside its cage (sort of like a shark cage) and were able to stroke it through the bars while it was distracted with treats. We also got to hand feed the macaws. We got absolutely soaked by a massive thunder storm which lasted a very long time and arrived at the exact moment we were as far away as possible from the shelter of the visitor centre
