Found a much nicer place to stay in Chaing Mai, thank god much cleaner! Everywhere seems to be deserted in Chaing Mai but we were told that there are too many guest houses and bars in Chaing Mai to the amount of tourists that go there so no one particular place gets busy.
Took a boat trip down the river with a liitle old man as our tour guide apparently the boat we were on was used for royalty back in the day! Went and vistited a few more temples but to be honest as amazing as they all are were getting a bit templed out now.
We booked an elephant day with the guest house we were in. They picked us up in the morning and first took us to a place that made paper from elephant dung! Strange but true. Then they took us to the elephant sanctury where we saw an elephant show to start with. We decided we didn't really like it, it was a bit cruel. When the show had finished we had an hour elephant ride throught the jungle. I was a bit scared, they don't seem to have much concern for health and safety in this country. We only had a rope holding us in. When we got off the elephants we got onto a bamboo raft which took us down the river to Ox cart riding. Wow they smell! We had lunch in a hotel nearby then they took us to the orchid farm then home. Really knackered!
We took a bus from Chaing Mai to Sukhothai, took about 5 hours. Sukhothai was the former capital, it has lots of old ruins in the old city. You cant stay in the old city so we got a lovely guest house in New Sukhothai. We had our own little hut really cute. The only way to see the old city is by bike. So we booked a bike tour and a guide. She took us through the old rice fields and to see how they grow the rice, then to a teak furniture factory where they make stuff to sell to the rest of the world.
The old city was really lovely to see, a lot different to the other places we have been so far (a bit like Kenilworth castle). We had to ride back to the guest house I thought I was going to pass out not being the most fit person in the world and in this heat it was a killer, the guide kept laughing at how red my face was although we did do 30km! I had a massage when we got back to ease the pain!
We had to go back to Bangkok for a couple of nights. We took a bus from Sukothai to Bangkok it is a 7 hour journey so in the price of the ticket you get lunch. We stoped at a road side services, we had a choice of about 8 different things but we didnt recognise anything so we had something that resembled green curry with chicken. I don't know what the hell it was but I took one mouthful and left the rest. I think it was tripe but Liam keeps telling me it was rat!
So as it was the weekend we took the advantage of going to the local weekend market. Wow you think Wellesbourne market is big 8000 stalls!!!! We walked around for 3 hours then got knackered, you would need 3 days to walk around it.
We have come to Kanchanaburi today on a bus from Bangkok, took about 3 hours and cost us a quid! It is really lovely here, out guest house is right on the river Kwai. We are planning on going to see the bridge over the river Kwai tomorrow.
Hope you are all ok.
Keep the e-mails and messages coming, we miss you all.
