Today was my second day in New Zealand. I had a very low-key day and just did some exploring. In the morning I woke up very early since I am still getting used to the time difference. I took my time getting up and ready for the day. I walked to The Warehouse, a store similar to Walmart, pre Super Walmart days, and picked up some things I still needed. The store is a very short distance from my dorm at the college and it took me less than ten minutes to walk there. Later, I took a long walk around the campus and figured out where the building for orientation is tomorrow. There are lots of nice walking trails around the campus that are near a pond.
Later, I met up with someone that I met through the Waikato International Facebook page. He has been here for one semester already so he showed me around the city. It was night time, but I got my first real look at Hamilton. It was a Sunday so almost all the stores close around five or six. Downtown was pretty quiet. We drove over the Waikato River which is the longest river in New Zealand and also saw the bus station and different night clubs and restraunts.
My tour guide, Prabhu, is a grad student here studying computer science. He came from India where he recieved his first degree. He said he misses India very much and keeps in touch with his parents once or twice a week. He also said that he has not met many Americans at Waikato and has the feeling that there are not many that come. He also helped me start looking into phones and plans, which was a big help.
