By now you have probably realized that most cultures stand a little closer to you when they talk than Americans. I had to exercise some serious self control not to continually back away when I was abroad. Sounds like you are having a blast. I should have warned you about the late, long dinners! Dinner is all about socializing and enjoying peoples company, satiating hunger is like a side note. :D
