We spent 3 nights in Hikkaduwa at Rita's Place, potentially this place is awesome, a real surfer chill out town, (Surfing Jesus). However as out of season there was only a few tourists and alot of Sri Lanken guys selling Cocunut Jewellry on the beach. We made the most of the sunshine and managed to burn ourselves to a crisp!! As we only had 10 days in Sri Lanka we had to make the decision to either travel further down the coast to more beaches which we were told were some of the best in the world or head back up to Colombo and go inland to Kandy to the famous Elephant Orphange. Well Elephants won so we took the very long and old rickety bus back up the coast to Mt Lavinia and the day after booked a day trip out to the orphanage. It definately was the best experience and nothing compared to the way the elephants were kept in India. We arrived when the elephants were having bathing time down by the river they were all free to run and swim around while we took alot of pictures. After bathing they were led by their mahouts (keepers) back up to the orphange for feeding time. The elephants were dotted around the stables with big piles of leaves to munch while we watched from the sides. This was an exciting time for the babies as their mothers were busy eating they all ganged up together and charged round the stables play fighting. One baby one actually came up and puts its trunk round Ruthy's neck and gave her a hug and asked her to take him home with her!!! It was such a good day and we never got bored of just watching them they really are amazingly massive but gentle creatures. The baby orphanes had to be bottle fed milk which they could not get enough of they downed about 10 bottles each. It was really sad to learn about how they ended up there after being rescued, one was blind from being shot by poachers, one had only 3 legs after stepping on a land mine and one had only one ear after a leopard apparantely chewed it off after it was abandoned by its mother in the jungle. A very worthy place which we would recommend to anyone.
Sri Lanka went very quickly and we really had a good time its definately so much nicer being near the sea. we booked ourselves into the 5* hotel for the last night and was upgraded to the deluxe suite it was like titanic on land, very classy and sophisticated (we really didn't fit in turning up with backpacks in a tuc tuc!!). We took full advantage of the freebies though and got right amongst the buffets until we felt sick.
Arrived in Bangkok this morning 7am, this place is so civilised compared to the other places we been so far and it just gets better the booze, food and clothes are even cheaper. Was so good to see a few home brands like Boots and Tesco and Mcdonalds!! We are staying in the main backpacking street, Ko Samui. Loads of travellers of all shapes and sizes. Have booked a flight on Tuesday to Vietnam to meet Beth and Jim for Burts birthday looking forward to seeing some familiar faces.
