Hello,
Arrived in Sri Lanka early Thursday morning, what a refreshing change!!! This place is lovely. Its called the teardrop of India but it has nothing in common with it. We skipped colombo as we wanted to get straight to the beach so headed for Mt Lavinia for 1 night. We really were excited about working on the tans coz we both agree burts is turning into a milk bottle but its been overcast and there was the biggest storm which lasted the whole day yesterday. We treated ourselves on Thursday night to a top class meal in an amazing restaurant, think it was well deserved after all the curries in India. The restaurant was right on the beach and as we were the only people dining we were given 1st class treatment. Next day we took the train which runs along the coast literally on the beach down to Bentota, its much more chilled out and the beaches get better the further south you go from colombo. The weather has been much better today so have been swimming in the sea, was a bit scary as the waves are quite big and drag you out and also there are tiny crabs walking sidways everywhere, random little creatures they are!! Have bought 3 paintings from a really nice guy who was so nice he wanted to give them to us but they were brilliant so we gave him 1000 rupees/ about 5 quid and he was more than happy. Went to a Turtle hatchery this morning they have to look after them as they are becoming endangered as poachers use there eggs to eat, rank!!! The people at the sanctuary collect the eggs from the beach and take them back to hatch which takes 48 days. We held some baby ones which were born yesterday they were so cute. There was also an albino turtle which is very rare, 1 in half a million. Tomorrow we are getting the train further down the coast to Hikkaduwa its supposed to be a big surfer town so we hoping to meet some more people as its still out of season at the moment and we have only seen a few Germans hanging around. Will try and put more pics on soon we are going to an elephant orphanage next week and have booked ourselves into a 5 *hotel in Mt Lavinia for our last night. It only cost 35 quid for the night but in season it can cost up to 100 quid. Think we need to stop treating ourselves but its so hard when its so cheap.
