DAY 9: VILLAGES, PARKS AND FESTIVALS
Our final day in New York City.
We hit Washington Square first and the neighbouring surroundings of Greenwich Village. Definitely upscale, with a lot of dollars to be found in the bricks and mortar around here. We also spotted a few familiar buildings from TV series such as 'Friends' and 'Sex in the City'.
From there we jumped on the train and headed uptown. It was a familiar feeling to be coming out of the subway at Columbus Circle, right next to Central Park and the hotel we stayed at the last time we were in NYC. While the buildings looked familiar, Central Park itself wasn't. The white blanket of snow and bare trees was replaced with green grass and foliage everywhere. It was also about 30deg warmer too. We returned to the Tavern on the Green for lunch (a favourite of our last holiday).
After revisiting a couple of Central Park favourites, we ducked back into the subway at 72nd St opposite the Dakota building and headed back downtown. Final stop for the day was the 90th Annual San Gennaro Feast in Little Italy.
Picture sideshow alley on people's day at the Ekka - now make that 'alley' about several blocks, line it with vendors selling every kind of Italian food available, then squeeze in tens of thousands of proud Italians and you're close to imagining what this festival was like - that's amore!
We're now back in our hotel deciding what to do for dinner. It's been a jam-packed three full days here and the sneakers have seen plenty of mileage.
Won't be a late night, because we have to be up early to catch an 8am Amtrak train to Philadelphia.
Fingers crossed the weather gods play nice with us this time!
