DAY 7: DOWNTOWN AND OVER THE BRIDGE
Been a big day today. It started off with a visit to the observation deck 102 floors up at One World Trade Centre. It was a couple of months off being completed last time we were here in early 2015, so I was glad we paid a revisit. Blue skies all round, so it was excellent viewing conditions up top!
From there we took a stroll through the 9-11 Memorial Gardens and Falls (the footprints of the former Twin Towers) as we made our way to the Brooklyn Bridge.
Last time, I literally had this bridge to myself as a blizzard was making its way in. Today we shared our crossing with a few thousand others, so the only danger faced was the chance of being rear-ended when stopping for a photo.
When we reached Brooklyn-side we had some classic pizza for lunch under the bridge. It was followed by some dessert at the Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory before we caught the ferry back to Manhattan.
We then jumped on the Staten Island Ferry for a free return trip to catch a passing photo op of the Statue of Liberty.
To finish off the day we made the trek back up Manhattan to our hotel, but not before stopping at one last photo op on the way - the firehouse used in the original Ghostbusters film. As luck (!) would have it, the building is currently undergoing some reno, so unfortunately the facade was totally covered in scaffolding and sheeting.
We finished off the day by returning to the little restaurant district a couple of blocks from our hotel, this time going for some Italian.
As said, it's been a big day. Our feet certainly covered some miles - will sleep well tonight!
