More rain this morning :(
Meredith and I had full intentions of waking up and going on the 11am NewEurope
free walking tour but we were not feeling a walking tour in the rain.
So instead we decided to hang out until the rain stopped, because it was suppose
to clear up in the early afternoon. We lounged around and cooked some feta
omelets. We eventually got ready and decided to head to the meeting point for
the 2pm walking tour.
Prague is also fairly small so we are able to walk everywhere. So we headed
down to the Old Town Square. We accidentally turned the wrong way down a street
and ended up at the National Museum. Which we later discovered is basically a
science and biology museum with a full whale skeleton. It is also the place
where 6 students lit their bodies of fire in efforts to fight the communist
army's presence in Prague.
On our way to the correct meeting spot we stopped by a small market of different
tents. It was fun to just wander around and look at all the Bohemian jewelry.
Meredith and I also got our Czech Republic patches for our bags! The only
problem is that we have been to six different countries now, and only have them
for two :) haha but we will just have to order the other countries or something.
We made our way to the Old Town Square, and boy was it busy! Germany was
playing Serbia (I think) in the World Cup, and there was a HUGE party for it.
There was a big screen to watch the game on and another stage with singers for a
pre-game show. There was also different games set up to play. Including a ride
the soccer ball game... that is set up like the ride-the-bull in the States. So
of course Meredith and I had to do it! We didn't last very long, I think I got
thrown off within 20 seconds, but it was funny.
The game had started by this time so we sat down and watched for about 20
minutes before heading to the meeting point for the walking tour.
There were about 25 people in our group for the walking tour, and we were lead
by Daniel. It was his first tour ever :) and he did a pretty good job. The
tour started off in the Old Town Square giving a history and showing us the
Astronomical Clock, which is pretty impressive. Earlier, Meredith and I were
actually able to see it turn 1pm, where the clock puts on a little show.
Nothing too extravagant but worth seeing if you're there.
The tour then went to the theater where Mozart directed and premiered his Don
Giovanni opera. We continued on seeing the Powder Tower (where gun powder was
stored) and learned a lot about the different architecture around Prague. And
it was interesting to see the different styles from during the communist era
compared to before the communist times.
We went to St. James church, where it is absolutely gorgeous on the inside! And
there is also a dried up arm hanging from a chain on one of the walls. Where
legend has it to be a thief's arm, that tried to steal a bracelet off of a
statue of Mary. The statue then came to live and grabbed his arm, a priest then
found the thief and hung his arm on the church wall... pretty morbid, but the
arm is really there.
We then entered the Jewish Quarter. Where we learned more about World War II
and the Holocaust. This is one area that we were really just able to walk
around, and not enter the museums. But if I were ever to come back to Prague,
that is definitely something I would want to spend more time exploring.
The tour ended by the Charles Bridge, where we received more information and it
was also a business spiel to go on NewEurope's tour of Prague Castle. Which
isn't free. That is where they really make there money.
The tour ended and Meredith and I each paid about $5 which is what we were told
to give by others. It wasn't a very extravagant tour but it was definitely
worth it. We are also excited because NewEurope offers free walking tours in
the next 4 places we are going. So we are definitely going to check those out.
After the tour we decided to head back to the hostel. We wanted to catch the
end of the USA FIFA game. We then went to the grocery store and got stuff for
dinner. We had the typical salad :) But it was really good.
Tomorrow we don't really have any plans. But to just wake up whenever and maybe
walk the Charles Bridge and explore a little more of Prague.
