After a three hour rickety, twisting, hungover mini bus journey. The four of us, Adam, Blake, B and myself arrived in Pai. Possibly my favourite place I visited in Thailand. It's just this quaint little town with waterfalls up in the mountains and elephants just by the roadside and the only really sensible way to get around is by motorbike, or moped.
So that's what we did, myself and Blake took the plunge and rode one for the first time ever on the basis of a few brief instructions from the other two.
What was really great as well was when the others got us lost trying to find the hostel. It was all great experience though and when we eventually made it to Darlings view we were in for more than a shock. The place looked nice, the view was incredible. The owner, Darling, however was f***ing crazy! She was this little old lady who bless her did a great job but she definitely had a few screws loose. She took us initially to a 6 bed room, which consisted of three double beds and a fan before realising her mistake and taking us to the much more luxurious 14 bed dorm that we'd booked.
Upon walking into the aforementioned dorm we were greeted by a simple arrangement of mattresses, ranging from springy to rock hard, on the floor. Colonies of ants roaming the walls, and a balcony with another incredible view.
Despite the appearance of the room, Darlings was probably one of my favourites hostels so far. The atmosphere between the other travellers is exactly what you want from a hostel and because we were a little way from town everyone was more than content to just drink together at the hostel.
Driving around Pai was an experience I'll never forget. The town is beautiful, driving up into the mountains to spend an afternoon sliding down rockslides in waterfalls, street food and amazing western food.
If there wasn't so much more of thailand I wanted to see I would have stayed so much longer than the four days that I did.
