So we've left San Francisco, and we're now in Oregon in a town called Eugene, just south of Portland. As we left San Francisco the weather was really great, and seeing as it was a Saturday, there were a lot of people out, ecspecially on the bridge. This was really our first leg on the road, and it was really exciting to get things moving. So we drove all day through some pretty cool little towns, and through the the mountains, and along the coast, the scenery was amazing. We eventually stopped at a place called Clam Beach, just outside of Eureka CA, and pitched a tent. This was the start of a pretty interesting night.
Now during the day it was really warm, but as it got darker, it got so cold. I had my big winter jacket out which I thought would be stuck in the bottom of my bag for the next few months, but no, it's already made an appearance. Me and Chris cooked up some soup and had a wander along the beach before coming back to get the fire cranking. As we were doing this, a girl and her mum walked past with their dog and we started talking. After a few minutes the mom left, but the daughter stayed behind. We were just chatting, but I got the feeling she was trying to make a move, and this was not the kind of girl we were interested in getting anywhere close to. So at some point she proceeds to tell us that she's on the run from the police, and when asked why, she said it was because she'd broken into a cemetery and had been kicking around a human skull which she said was already there. There were also other drug offences, and apparently her whole family except her mom was on the run. Now these are just the kind of people I wanna pitch a tent next to.
About an hour or so later me and Chris decided that we needed more firewood, so we started walking along the beach where we had seen some when it was still light. Next thing you know, we're shining our lights on a bone which looks awfully similar to a human leg/shin bone. It was about then that we started to get pretty freaked out. Not freaked out enough to stop us looking for wood, but enough to make us imagine the variety of ways we were going to die in the next few hours.
In the end, we didn't die (thank God),but managed to burn off our firewood as well as some cans and bottles.
So the next morning we packed up and hit the road again, up to Eugene, but not before calling te cops and letting them know that there might be some people that they're looking for at the camp. The only reason we did this was because we heard they give rewards for infoleading to an arrest. Money rewards. And we could do with that sweet green.
So we got to Eugene and 2 out of the 3 hostels we checked out were pretty wierd. At one place they had a rule that no meats were allowed in the kitchen. Hippies!!! They didn't have places anyways, so we headed to our last choice (the area apparently has a bad reputation), and it turned out to be exactly what we needed. Very homely, and the people running it were really cool as well. To bad the other guy in our room was a class 5 snorer, because i got hardly any sleep. Â
