Out the door of Montclair Hostel at 5:45 am this morning so we could catch the first metro and orly bus to the airport on our way to Barcelona! As we few in the sun was shining and we were looking out over the ocean! We navigated out way through another bus and metro system and as usual had the most trouble with finding the right way following a walking map. After not too long we found the street with the help of two local ladies. Luis, the Gracia! City Hostel front desk man from Mexico stored our bags, and directed us to nearby square to get lunch. Amelie is the name of the restaurant, and we both got cod with potatoes. It was salty but delicious! Dessert was included! Kayla got cheesecake and I got a child's cup of ice cream...everything was so good and so much cheaper than Paris! We went back the hostel to check in, and our room is really cute. It reminds me of a strawberry. After resting for a while we walked to Sagrada Familia. The outside has a lot of construction happening, as it is still unfinished, but is still an amazing sight. We walked around the exterior and then gave ourselves a self-guided tour of the interior. Seeing the inside of Sagrada Familia many end up being my favorite site of the entire trip. It is so surprising and beautiful. Kayla and my combined description is emerald city, willy wonka, and lord of the rings. All good things. It would be really cool to go back when it's finished, but the anticipated finish date is 150 years from now. There was also a walk through exhibition explaining and showing Antoni Gaudi's inspiration for Sagrada Familia that I thought was really interesting. On our way down to where our hostel had given us a free meal card to we walked by La Pedrera (also designed by Antoni Gaudi) and Batllo House (a house with a mosaic facade). We stopped at Placa de Catalunya, which is a square with sculptures and a fountain. There were also many pigeons in the square, which Kayla and found great joy of/with. Next we stopped at Boqueria Market, which is an open market with tons stands selling fruits, veggies, nuts, candies, herbs & seasonings, meat, cheese, and sea food of all kinds. It was amazing! The first thing both of us bought was a cup of mixed fruit. We plan on going back tomorrow. There were skinned goat heads with the eyes still in, all kinds of squid, live lobster, and tons of kinds of shrimp! We ripped ourselves away to find our restaurant in the old part of town, which has super narrow and less organized streets. We found it pretty easily, but were hours early. Luckily this area is chalk full of less mainstream shops and bars/restaurants, so we walked around a shopped. We tried on some clothes, and had a few laughs. I found a dress I liked that was reasonably priced and got that-might go back for a pair of shoes:) and Kayla had a pair of pants that need to be made hers tomorrow. The shops in these ticked away streets are the best I've seen so far, just a really cool place. We went to the restaurant we had a card for called Travel Bar to wait until 8 when they would serve whatever the free dish of the day was. In the meantime we ordered sangria (very yummy) and used some free wifi. The meal of the day happened to be chicken curry! What a deal. After dinner we walked back to our hostel for some chocolate, cleaning ourselves, and a hopefully restful nights sleep (if people stop ringing the front doorbell to the hostel that is 20 feet from our room!)
