Milan, Ohio to Marengo, Il - 353 miles
99o & Sunny
Day 55
Sunrise this morning was gorgeous.Today started early as we were serenaded by traffic and trains throughout the night. When the alarm went off at 6:00am we were already readying ourselves for the day…..and what a day it was to be.
The highways on this portion of our trip (rt80/rt90) were extremely rough. The constant tha-thump has taken it's toll on one of our new mirrors.Hugh's repairs held, but another part has come loose. As with most things that need repair, they break on Sunday. No repair shops were open so we chose to keep going. We managed to maneuver well enough in Ohio.As we approached Chicago the drive got more and more challenging. The lanes went from two to eight. The cash toll lanes were our downfall…..Ykes!We had no mirror on the right to see traffic and move over.I know now why I am not encouraged to drive. It was my job to stick my head out the passenger window to see if we could move over.I had more bugs in my hair than on the windshield! My hair spray only added to the problem it acted like fly paper….Yuck! As we stopped to pay tolls my second responsibility was to stick an aluminum extension pole out the passenger window and push the loose arm of our mirror back into position. That only worked for a while and only if we were lucky enough to be able to safely make it into the tollbooth.Construction on the roads added to our grief.
We finally made it to Lemans Family Travel Resort. The RV Park was very nice. The people there like most mid-westerners were so very helpful. One nice guy by the name of Russ dove right into his tool box and fixed our mirror so we did not have to go to a shop or by tools we did not have. What a nice guy.
That evening we marveled at our good fortune to not have had an accident and to have arrived at our destination unscathed. We watched the sunset as the mosquitoes descended on us.It was beautiful!
