Time to get off the celebrity Equinox and explore some more on land. We had to get up early to have breakfast & be out of the room by 8am but then didn't have our departure time until 9.20am. We had to wait around in the theatre for a while watching repeat clips from the cruise video but soon enough we disembarked, collected our bags, queued for immigration then caught a taxi to the Fort Lauderdale Airport Trirail station for the train to Miami airport. The trains were only every hour so we had to wait around 45mins, luckily they had free wifi on the platform, and then also on the double decker train once it arrived. It took a while to get to the end of the 6 stations & once we arrived it was up to the car rental centre, out the doors and a fox rent-a-car shuttle turned up nearly straight away. Arriving at the office it was a bit of a wait in line as other people took forever working out their stuff. Finally we got the keys to our Mustang convertible only to have the mirrors not work so they had to bring around another car, this one was white. I was driving & almost as soon as we left the yard it started raining. As we navigated down the various freeways to the start of the keys it got heavier & heavier. We thought we would make it to our accommodation half way up the keys at Marathon by 5pm when the reception closed but the rain got so heavy I had to pullover. They were going to leave a key out for us but when we finally arrived a little after 5 the office was still open so we were checked in & shown to our room. Given this was the most expensive accommodation of my trip at $320USD for 2 nights (there were no cheap options in the keys) we were a little disappointed. It was appointed with recently updated facilities but it was in an old fishing shack with a lick of paint that had paper thin walls, an air conditioner which even when turned off still came to life by itself & practically useless wifi. The rain had subsided so we got breakfast supplies across the road at the servo then a little later tried a basic family Mexican restaurant up the road a little. My tacos were authentically good & they even had jamaica tea! After all the transport & driving we were ready for bed after dinner, hitting the hay before 9!
