I swear not all of my experiences are negative? sure I could tell you about all the amazing historical sites and other countless new things I'm experiencing, but I'll get to that later. My mind is just popping around every turn, and I'm learning more than I ever have. But some of those learning experiences come in the form of confusion, frustration, or even fright.
The second night, we decided to see the second largest street fair in Europe:Notting Hill festival. We showed up at 9:00 pm, thinking that it was a night fair as well.Apparently the fair ended at that very time, so we attempted to join in the after-party festivities. It was surprisingly hard to find a pub to go into.We jumped in a bus, and after about 5 minutes, the bus pulled off the side of the road, and the driver said "get out, I'm broken down."Immediately after we got off, the driver pulled away.So there we are, with a bus-load of drunken strangers, a long distance away from a bus station, let alone one that we recognize.
After a lot of walking and arguing over maps and who's guiding who, we arrive in this very middle-eastern part of town, with countless hookah bars, Lebanese and Turkish food.A nice place. We're waiting for the bus when this guy comes up and starts to talk to Amanda, and asks where she's from. When she says the US, he goes nuts.He tells us how much he hates America, and that someday we're all going to die when Iraq gets their revenge, and other really frightening things. He kept walking away, and then coming back to say his mind.He getting louder and more out of control.Luckily we found a police vehicle right next to us.I walked over and told him the situation, and he had someone take the man away?and we went the opposite way.We wanted to get out of that place as quickly as possible.
About 2 hours of walking, arguing, and frustration, we are close to the next bus stop we need to get to.That's when a group of guys walked along with us and offered us some dope. That's apparently normal here, so I wasn't worried. Then one of them came close enough to rub up against me.And it was only after they left, that I noticed someone went in my right back pocket while he distracted me.Luckily I was told that this stuff goes on, so I anticipated it by putting my wallet in my front pocket. It's crazy how good these guys are at what they do.
So that was my second night.Like I said before, I've experienced so many wonderful things since, but it's just something that I thought would be noteworthy.I swear, the next blog will be more cheerful.
