With a brief stop over in Atlanta, we flew into St Louis this evening.
Pleasantly surprised by St Louis. It is a very pretty city, with relatively quiet, spotless roads and parks, it is in stark contrast to most of the places we have visited.
Although celebrating a 250 year anniversary this year, it is very modern and would appear well funded. The people have a friendly disposition and friendly smiles. Much like New Orleans, but without the clutter..
Unknown to us, the highest man made monument in the US is located in St Louis. Called the "Gateway", it celebrates the Westward expansion of the United States.
The Gateway is an amazing looking monument. 192m high, it was first conceived in the early 30's and finally built in the 60's.
We had a good look through the museum located below the arch and then took a cable capsule to the top of the arch... Quite a view !
Afterwards, we wandered through the heart of the CBD, grabbing lunch in a 200yr old brewery and ending up at the St Louis courthouse. It was here that the court case deciding the future of a slave named Dred Scott was held. Dred Scott sued the American government for his freedom from slavery for more than 10 years. The eventual decision against him and the election of Abraham Lincoln as the 16th President in 1860 were the catalyst for the American Civil War.
Returning home, we had a quiet night in and watched some TV...
