Our plans to take Ruby for a top down cruise around Indianapolis today were thwarted by waking to light showers and overcast skies… None the less, we had enjoyed the trip.Dropping her off at the airport, we grabbed a cab and headed to The Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Nicknamed "The Brickyard" as the original racing surface was paved with bricks to replicate roads of the time..With a seating capacity of over 250,000, IMS is the largest seated spectator venue in the world.Coincidentally, it was conceived and constructed in 1908 by a partnership formed by Carl G Fisher, (the same guy that dredged Miami Harbour to build Fisher Island). Mr Fisher obviously had a “Can Do” attitude!
Today's activities were qualifying sessions leading up to the inaugural “Grand prix of Indianapolis” scheduled for tomorrow. We scoped the venue to find the best vantage points, settling on turn one at the end of the main straight, we figured, this would be where all the action would take place…
Indy cars are LOUD!! Not controlled by nandy pandy noise levels restrictions, the engines scream to 14000 rpm with no mufflers in place. Put this between two grandstands 30m tall on a straight about a kilometre long and your ears are ringing for a little while after leaving the venue…
Heading home around 4.30pm, we had dinner at a burger joint around the corner from our hotel and put our feet up.
I spent the next few hours sorting the following week’s plans with airfares and accommodation. To date, we still didn’t have anywhere to stay in New York… Hotels in Manhattan are hugely expensive and it seems most of AirBnB is booked well in advance…
