This morning I took a stroll along the main promenade here at Larnaca. It seemed like I was the only one out this morning. Such a change from Cairo.
Followed this up with Haloumi and a banana smoothie at a little cafe overlooking the water. Then checked out the main church, which is where Lazarus was bishop after being raised from the dead. He was buried under the alter here (after dying the second time!), although his body was later moved to France. A very beautiful church.
Larnaca is very quiet. It has a population of about 70 000. My accommo is on the outskirts of the city and it's about a 20 minute walk along the waterfront to the city centre. It seems to be a fairly wealthy city- there are lots of shops that I certainly can't afford to shop in. Although nothing is open on the weekend here anyway. Changing my money over is proving to be a difficult task, and for some reason the ATMs here don't like my cards. Will have to be careful until Monday.
This afternoon I drove to the nearby Agia Napa which is famous for it's beaches. Spent a couple of hours lounging on the beach, then back to Larnaca. The beaches here are lovely, although I still think it's pretty hard to beat the ones back home! Must be here in very low season. Was the only one on beach.
For those interested- Cyprus is a very small island. About half the size of Tasmania. The northern half of Cyprus is Turkish and the southern half Greek. I'm only visiting the Greek part. The lack of public transport made the hire car essential.... Although the distances between towns is not all that far.
Ps- thanks for all the messages. I love reading them.
