Our first full day in Hoi An, It really is such a nice place! We've decided to stay one extra night instead of staying in Da Nang before our flight.
We decided to explore Hoi An's old town today, apparently you have to pay to get in which is a rip off (after paying we found out you only have to pay if you want to walk around the buildings, which we didn't. So we definitely got ripped off)
Its so lovely in the old town though, Little shops, cafes and markets everywhere. Very peaceful. Then we reached the end which seemed a little 'rougher' shall we say?! Anyway… for a few days now i had been thinking i majorly needed my eyebrows threaded & it just so happened that there was a woman standing in the market with a piece of thread ready to thread peoples eyebrows, Jackpot! So i thought….
Once i showed interest she immediately grabbed my hand and rushed me along the street, i should have aborted mission as soon as this started happening, but i was just so happy i was no longer going to have a monobrow!
A couple of minutes later she lead us down a very small alley and into a very small room… I thought we were going to be raped by this woman.
She quickly sat me down and started to thread…. MY FACE. Like not just my eyebrows like i had asked she threaded… the side of my face, my chin, my lip, my FOREHEAD!! WHO HAS A HAIRY FOREHEAD?! ME APPARENTLY?! And then she did my eyebrows last…
James was laughing at me the whole time this was happening, So i asked them to do his eyebrows too HAHA!! As so they did his whole face aswell, I literally could not stop crying, it was just the funniest thing ever & then to top it off they started to strip him down, and took his top off his! And started to thread his back! I have never heard of anyway threading anyones back before, but here it was infront of my eyes! I tried to speak to James at this point, but he would have nothing to do with me and just ignored anything i was trying to say through my fits of laughter!
i shouldn't really have been laughing because they literally tried to take my trousers off to thread my fufu… Not even wax, thread! I downright refused this proposition and held onto my trousers…
After we were hair free :/ (no hair no monkey they kept saying to us) although maybe they need to realise we're not the ones who look like monkeys (soz) Once James was fully clothed again i tried to pay for our 'treatments' so she wanted 2000,000 VND which is £60!! I nearly had a heart attack, like seriously i couldn't believe she even had the cheek to ask for so much after doing so little! & also doing so little of what we didn't actually ask for!
I was fuming, but James did not give me any support, merely stating this was all my fault anyway so that I had to deal with the consequences. We paid 1000,000 VND in the end which is about £30 which is still way too expensive for what they did, but i was quite scared of these women and with no male support i had to bail. It was however my fault we were in this situation in the first place, hands up. But i was excited! James still to this day hasn't seen my point on this. So we have agreed to never speak of this day again (until now)
After this we were both pretty pissed off so just went back to our homestay (mainly so i could sit in my room and think about what i had just done) Once James started to see the funny side, he became hungry so we headed out for food but the weather was horrible, chucking it down! So we got very wet! What a brilliant day this was…
In the evening we went into the old town (without paying) and went to a few bars. I had found a 'silent' cafe online, i thought it sounded intriguing was insisted on giving it a go! We had a look around and finally found it, we walked in and didn't really know what to do, could we day hello?! We just nodded at the waiters and took a seat. It was pretty cool really, all the employees were speech impaired so we had to communicate using some blocks with words on and ticking the menu. To be honest the menu was pretty crappy but now we were here we felt obliged to have a drink, so James had an orange juice and i had a green tea! It come with some funny looking green things that i didn't really know what to do with, so i put them in the tea! after looking at pictures on trip advisor i think you were supposed to eat them, OOPS!
To end the evening we took a walk down by the river to light some lanterns, light them, make a wish and set them sail down the river which was lovely, apart from the crashed 2 seconds away…
