Bob and Nige-The World Tour 2006! (Fi & Jen)
Queenstown is quality!!
We arrived after a 10 hour bus journey through the mountains, stopping off at the mirror lakes and coastal tracks.
Finally after checking into our hostel we got out on the town for a few bevs. The nightlife is a real treat! we were served long island ice tea out of tea pots in the world bar and attracted the usual gremlins to the table instead of the fit ski and snowboarding instructors we would have preferred. However we quickly shook them off and headed to the dance floor to 'throw a few shapes'. After one 'living on a prayer' too many we crawled back to the hostel at 3am.
7am start, blazing sun, 9 degrees, result!! We decide its now or never and sign up for the afternoon bungy jump off the 134m Nevis skywire (2nd biggest in world) with our attitude of all or nothing we thought this one would certainly be worth the 3 hours of bricking it before hand.
I persuaded Nige to take a ride up the gondola to the top of Queenstown to try and apprehend the sort of heights we would be leaping from later that day.. this is when I actually began to fear for my life.
12pm came far too fast and we were weighed and asked to sign a disclaimer in case of death. lovely-this was cetainly not doing me any favours on the nerves front. 5 toilet trips later we got onto the bus which was to transport us to the Nevis 40 minutes out of Queenstown, it was at this point that the horror stories of popping out eyeballs on the end of violent bungy jumps began to emerge ...although the stony silence that quickly ensured our arrival at the Nevis was possibly even more frightening, suddenly the 21 'supermen' also on the bus had turned into quiverring pansies.
That bus ride was the shortest of my life, after asking the driver if we could perhaps take the longer way round I was quickly denied and whisked off the bus and into a harness faster than ever imaginable. By this time I had resigned to the fact that me and Jen were going to leap and so stopped fiumbling and bravely set off to the viewing platform. My horror quickly returned however when i spotted the jumping platform SUSPENDED ABOVE THE BLOODY RIVER-NOT ON SOLID GROUND!!! instead a 'pod' transported us to the middle of the ravine ready to plummet.
heart in mouth we all watched as the first jumper experienced the 9 second freefall... byt this time I had realised I was the one of the last to jump and couldnt possibly let the c*** heavy party (4 girls, 21 guys) triumph over the girls so I was definately going to have to go through with it. So 1 hour later we both jumped... aarrrrrrgggggghhhhh, head first diving off the platform into nothingness..then relief as the bingy cord kicks in and you get the bumps. Nige gracefully managed to detach her first harness and get wuinched back up to safety head first, no such luck for me it was feet first all the way-much to the staffs amusement... although the feeling after is one of massive personal triumph-you cant stop smiling!!! and we both agreed it was even better than the skydive, in fact it was/is the best thing we have both ever done (we realise we have said this before-but this time we are definatley sure!)
To see our jumps you can go to www.ajhackett.com (look for jump 3 on 15th July) otherwise we will try and post them on the pictures page-we think you will be tres impressed! We are no longer mere mortals-but invincible (apparently)
