Bob and Nige-The World Tour 2006! (Fi & Jen)
Hey kids!
So after our skydive we spent the next day walking through the national park in Abel Tasmen as a more relaxing activity -gorgeous, then we felt the need to stay in the hostels spa and sauna for the remainder of the night-its a hard life.
So after Nelson we picked up the pace and headed to Greymouth which was pretty vile to be honest-it rained the whole day and everyone in the town seemed to be a bit of a tool, needless to say we didnt take up the bus drivers offer of pickled eggs and a dart competition in the local working mens club that evening!
So we set off the next day at stupid o clock and made it to Franz Josef halfway through the day, deciding to be hardcore (and completely put off by the torrential rain) we decided to opt for the full day glacier hike the following day, retreating once again to the hostel spa with glasses of wine in hand.
ERROR.. woke up the next day at 7am to possibly the worst weather ever- minus 4 degrees, pissing rain and snow showers. bloody fantastic. So kitted up in 7 layers, waterproofs, hats and hiking equiptment (looking like the most unfashionable train spotters ever) we set about the 13km walk up and around Franz Josef glacier. Now, dont get us wrong, the glacier was absolutely amazing and the scenery gobsmacking, but I can honestly say I would rather chew off my own arm than go through the torture of that climb ever again.
After 3 hours we had both lost all feeling from the waist down battling through the gale force winds and snow hiking up this glacier, 30 minutes after that I could just about still speak and thats when..yep..typically both me and Jen fell one after the other into an ice pool. waist deep. Needless to say we were the most enthusiastic people on the hike back down and practically sprinted the last 3km back to the bus. 'this is the worst day of my life' Jenny mumbled repetadly. youre not kidding love, we could have got the same pleasure jumping into a sub zero lake than sitting in the wet clothes for 6 hours in a freezer. If anyone is thinking of doing this hike-make sure the sun is shining or you have balls of steel. The gide later exclaimed back at the shop..'thats the worst conditions I have ever experienced on that glacier..unbelieveable'. (marvellous)
So after that ordeal we were more than happy to be travelling to queenstown for some extreme activities! (fingers crossed for better weather!
