Hellooo there,
After our 11 and a half hour drive from Hervey bay, we arrived at Airlie beach feeling like death ?and just wanting to sleep. We drove around looking for our accomodation and guess where it was?! Yep, bang next to a nightclub/bar so after realising that we weren't going to get to sleep, we decided to crack open some cans while we got ready and head out asap to sample the local nightlife. As it was getting pretty late (Half 10ish which is late for us, we usually start drinking about 7, ;-D), we decided to get straight on the vodka redbulls which were going down nicely! We ended up in the nightclub until the early hours (Now theres a surprise ) then headed to bed looking forward to the sailing adventure!
We woke up feeling a bit rough and headed down to the supermarket to get some supplies (BeeeeeeeeeeeR). From there we headed to the port and were last on the boat (nothing new by now). We were introduced to the crew and the boat by 'el capitan', followed by a safety briefing in which she gave out a few warnings about not swimming after dark etc. She then told us, in no uncertain terms, that anyone who didn't obey these rules would be picked up by the 'water police' and arrested. During this part of the speech her eyes were firmly fixed on us, no idea why, just four easy going, trouble free English guys here captain .
We were then shown to our beds and because we were the last on, our beds were split up with two people sleeping in the kitchen area, one at one end of the boat and the other at the other end. Me and Dave got the beds in the kitchen which, although it was like sleeping in a coffin, was where the best beds were situated. James and Miller had to sleep in hammocks where the bed bugs were very much alive and hungry! The downside for us was that we got woke every morning at 7 because the crew were preparing the breakfast but at least we had a few hours of good sleep.
After that, we set sail and they took us to a place where we could snorkel to see tropical fish and the coral reef. We put on our 'stinger suits' and took a few pics because we all looked like clowns, then took a dive into the sea with one eye on the fish and one eye looking for a fin in the water . After looking around for a while and getting back on the boat in one piece we sailed for a bit longer before dropping anchor and settling down for the night. The crew prepared the nicest meal we had in ages and the food didn't dissapoint us all through the trip. After that, the 'el vino' was flowing and we got to know some of the other people on the boat. Some were ok, others annoying like the posh boys who kept on wanting to put a Van Morrison cd on (whats that all about???).
After waking up at 7, I went back to sleep til 8 . Once I woke up, all the fruit salad had gone (Nooooooooooooo) so I had to make do with a couple of slices of toast with jam and a cup of tea. We set sail to our next diving area and had a good swim around, taking pictures of the fish with an underwater camera so it will be good to see how those pictures come out. We sailed further on and went diving once again but this time, me, James and Miller decided to stay on the boat and catch a few rays.
Later on we sailed to a beautiful beach where we had a game of football before sitting with a big plate of nachos (with cheese) watching the sun go down, was awesome. We got back on the boat and had another delicious meal followed by some more delicious beers. I got to bed a bit earlier this time (still after 1) so that I could get up in the morning for some of the fruit salad.
The next morning we had our breakfast and sailed round the islands for a while before heading back to the marina. It was another quality 3 days that we had and we enjoyed every minute of it.
The next stop was Townsville before we head up to mission beach (for the dreaded sky dive) then on up to Cairns.
Will update tommorow
