Bob and Nicks excellent adventures
We are now in Dunedin, a few hours drive south of Christcurch. It is pretty miserable weather, frezing cold and pissing it down with rain. This, however was not going to dampen our spirits!
With grit and determination we decided to hitch a ride to the peninsula, about 25Km out of Dunedin, which as a point would provide spectacular views, in the summer, ha ha. We wernt waiting for very long before an Aussie couple picked us up on the main road to the peninsula. They didnt reall know where they were gioing but we let them know that there was promise of seeing all manner of wildlife out there, including none other than the yellow-eyed penguin!!! What a bloody treat. So we headed for Taiaroa head.
But....when we arrived in the rain and wind, we found out that you can only access the main penguin beaches with an organised tour. Not only that, the penguins are reluctant to come shorewards until dusk. Now this trew a coupke of spanners in the works. So we decided to take a walk down to on eof the public beaches where thre was a chance to see some blue blue penguins. But alas, when we got there, thre was a sign explaining that the penguin nesting season was over and we were unlikely to spot any. There was no way we were standing there waiting for nothing to happen so we hopped back in the car and the same couple gave us a lift to the lanarchy castle. It may not be such a waste after all. Or so we thought. After driving up a few winding roads to the top of some hill, we arrived at the gates of the castle grounds, only to find that there was an admission fee of 10 dollars each, a price that noone was willing to pay. We therefore didnt even get so much as a glimpse of the castle. Back to Dunedin then, and not much to do there apart fom maybe venture back to the Warehouse, which is a big f***-off cheap shop catering for everyones needs!! fun fun fun.
One good thing to come out of the day though is that it was easy to hitch a liftand that stands us in good stead for travelling down to Queenstown tomorrow. Everyone is so friendly, not like the English ha ha ha
