Day 1 - 12/02/09
Late start to the day so had a free morning to get last minute bits in KL and brunch. We left KL at 12.30. After a 2hr bus journey in the comfiest bus so far!!! We had a short journey in a van that had seen better days and then had to take a boat ride to the place where we were staying. The place we were headed to was in the centre of a dam, it was a 7 hectare island and the family living here have been welcoming Intrepid travellers to their home for the last 13 years. It was amazing, the closest way I can describe it would be 'Heaven on Earth'. The Suka Suka resort is run by Aziz and his wife Asiyah, they welcomed us and showed us around the island. We had a few hours to dinner so everyone quickly got changed and jumped into the lake to have a swim. Dinner that evening was delicious, Asiyah had made Malaysian dishes and we had Assam their 5 yr old son entertaining us. After dinner we were introduced to Chongkka, a Malaysian local game, it was very addictive. No one seemed to realise how late it had got. We reluctantly decided to head to bed, but somehow everyone ended up going to the lakeside to enjoy the moonlight shining on the water and attempt to take an amazing photo of the moon. We finally managed to call it a night after deciding to get up to watch the sunrise at 7 am.
Day 2 - 13/02/09
Got up early and was at breakfast by half 8. Took the boat to the Batu Ring village, where the lay out of the village was explained, their means of earning a living and the day to day routines etc. After getting the detailed tour, we headed to the waterfall. The path was treacherous, had to wade through water and clamber over rocks. Weather was too hot for this much effort, but when we finally made it to the falls, it was worth it. It was an amazing experience swimming in a waterfall!! We reluctantly got out and headed back to the village. I almost pulled our guide in when I lost my balance on some rocks but luckily we both managed to recover before falling in however Jemma did manage to pull him into the water. It was hilarious!!! We got to the village and had a nice cup of tea before making our way back to the island. Got back in time for lunch, which was delicious rice noodles with tofu. After which we were shown how to put on the sarong in the traditional way as that was how we had to dress for dinner. Then had the afternoon to spend as we wished. Some of the others took the kayaks out round the island. Katie and I decided on starting a game of Chongkka. After a while we gave up and chilled, chatting with Tania. The heat was intense so we decided to go for a swim. By this time the others had got back to the island so we were all messing around in the water. At half 4 Katie and I went to learn a few Malay dishes, it was amazing how simple it was. It was an interesting experience, learnt 3 new dishes undoubtedly will have to find some guinea pigs. After the lesson, I joined Tania, Mike, Felicity and Dan in their frisbee game. After which I got showered put on my sarong ready for dinner. Dinner was traditional Malaysian style 0 sitting on the floor and using our hands. It was good, helped clear up and do the washing then spent the eve chatting away with our hosts.
