Here I am at this flash golfers heaven in the wilds of Northumberland. It is 8pm and I can still see the poor tragics playing from my window. This must have been the only place in the Hexham area that my agent could find for me. Very nice all the same.
Today I drove up from Malham in the Yorkshire Dales. What a delightful part of the world! My hosts at Malham run a B&B which is actually a converted railway siding on the main line to Carlisle. Every now and then there's a Whoosh and another train goes past. The passenger services are small and are remarkably silent as they zoom past on the jointless rails.
I beetled down to the Victoria Inn for a quiet sip and a nice meal. It was Saturday night wasn't it and the place was chokers. Some locals claimed me however and a good night was had by all.
On the way up today I had a look at a couple of excellent English Heritage properties.
The first was an impressive old priory at Lanercost in Cumbria. It is largely a ruin but much of the main structure remains and I it found rather impressive. It hosted that well noted Scot botherer King Edward 1 and all his entourage for some months when he was ill in the early 14th century. Thus it was officially the nation's capital for a short time. Remarkably the main church still functions today albeit with a diminishing congregation.
Heading east now and Hadrian's Wall is evident here and there. The best sites are ready for paying tourists. I spent a while wandering about the remains of the Roman Fort at Birdoswald. Spectacular elevated position in sheep country.
By now the weather had taken a turn for the worse and was blowing a veritable gale with intermittent showers. I am glad I packed by cold and wet weather gear. No wonder the Romans went home.
