The weather has improved a bit the last couple of days, so that it's only fairly miserable.
I was glad to get out of Edinburgh and back into the country, traveling south through coastal Northumbria.
I stopped off for a few hours at Holy Island to wander over to Lindisfarne Castle and then check out the old abbey ruins. It's referred to as an island because tidal flows regularly cover the access causeway, which is something tourists have to keep an eye on.
The Benedictine Monastery was built commencing in 1093. Henry number 8 dissolved this and other monasteries in 1537. Soon thereafter the castle was built as a defensive measure against the recalcitrant scots who were newly allied with the frogs. Much of the sandstone construction from the monastery was subsequently flogged for construction of the castle.
It was getting bloody cold by the time I left there, with a short run to my overnight stop at Bamburgh.
Tomorrow .... Yorkshire!

John B It's getting a bit coolish here as well. We're sitting in front of the fire (outside) having a couple of nice Aussie reds. Not those semi cold ales your enjoying (i'm a bit jealous as I'm sure I would enjoy them as well). You pointed me to the haggis menu but you didn't say that you have tried it. Well? Have you and how was it?
Yours truly Yes John I have, and it was quite good. It was spiced up nicely and served with potato mash an crushed turnips in a sauce, washed down with Guinness. There Are some good beers here, lagers being my faves so far. A pint of John Smith last night was great, and it was served fairly cold.
