At the moment we are off the boat and in London, staying at the Hilton in Paddington, but we need to go back a bit, around Nuremburg we noticed a lot of people were coughing and even Peter started to feel badly and had the most shocking cough and then the whole boat came down with it, the supid part was even though some were so sick they still got up and went on tours, talk about spreading the sickness around, finally in Vienna a doctor was bought on board, I was diagnosed with bronchitis and Peter also had bronchitis and tonsilitis, Happy days!!!! before this we had opted to stay in our cabin and only venturing out when we knew the boat was nearly empty and having our meals in the cabin, we missed a lot of towns and tours we wanted to go on and believe me I was so happy to see Budapest as I was going cabin crazy. Once leaving the boat and checking in to the hotel we headed straight to bed and slept for a solid 17 hours.
Now to recap
Monday 28th
We arrived in Passau, which was the last German town that we were to dock at, it is located in Germany's largest state, Bavaria and the city is located on the confluence of three rivers, Danube, Liz and the Inn, with a total population of 50000. This is town where we were to take a full day tour on an Imperator Royal train to Salzburg and spend the day touring the city and shopping and then back on the train to catch the boat at Linz, we were still to sick and therefore did not do the tour, but it was so peaceful, basically having the boat to yourself, only about 10 people stayed on board as we quietly cruised the Danube to Linz.
Tuesday 29th
Now we are in Austria and cruising to Melk, we docked here for the morning and I decided just to go for a walk on my own, what a beautiful little town, totally dominated by the Melk Abbey which is built high on the hill overlooking the town, at first it was a private residence and since 1089 it has been a Benedictine Monastery, I was sad to miss this tour as all reports is that it is just stunning inside. Around lunch the boat once again was on its way but this time only cruising for around three hours arriving in Durnstein, one of Austria's smallest towns.
Wednesday 30th..Thursday 1st
Today we arrived in Vienna for a stay of 34 hours and at last we were able to get a doctor on board, Not Good, but later on in the day we did make the effort to get a taxi and visit the city (Help, we needed money) firstly going to St Stephen's Cathedral, a truly beautiful building, and then just having lunch and a walk around, we also celebrated our 49th Wedding Anniversary in Vienna but was still too sick to drink the champagne given to us by the cruise staff. Vienna is definately on the go back to bucket list.
Friday 2nd
Overnight we have travelled to Budapest in Hungary and this is our last full day on board. Budapest is literally the city on the river, once two different cities, Buda on the West Bank and Pest on the East Bank and only ferries connected the two cities until the first suspension bridge was built in 1873 and it was only then that the two cities were united and became Budapest, although the locals will tell you they either live on the Buda side or the Pest side of the river. We stayed on board until Saturday and then transferred to our hotel as we had elected to stay a few extra days, we did do the hop on hop off bus for a day and had a look at a couple of attractions but still really sick to fully appreciate the city. once again another beautiful city and one I would like to revisit. Only problem I had was the different currency, we were so used to the Euro but Hungary has the Forint and some stores will accept the Euro but you get Forint back in change and I just couldn't get my head around the conversion of Forint to Aussie, some great eating restaurants and shopping.
